The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is an internationally established university with 160 years of history that is rooted in the Bauhaus tradition in the sense of its progressive mindset. We combine science and technology with art and design. This approach characterises the faculties of Architecture and Urbanism, Civil Engineering, Art and Design, and Media. In addition to their subject-specific functions, the faculties are also committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and to the interpermeation between art, science and practise. Internationality, open-mindedness and a readiness to cooperate are deeply embedded values in the culture of the university with its students, professors, junior professors and employees.
The Faculty of Art and Design at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is currently inviting applications for the immediate position of
W1-Professorship (with tenure track to W3) »Typography«
The »Typography« professorship belongs to the Department of Visuelle Kommunikation (Visual Communication). The successful candidate is responsible for imparting the fundamentals of design, methodological knowledge, and practical knowledge of analogue and digital typography with an emphasis on innovative approaches, experimental processes and applicable formats. In addition to undergraduate courses, the professorship also supports students in their project work, exhibitions, transfer projects, and final theses/projects. Responsibilities also include supervising post-graduate thesis work. Research in the professorship should focus on the radical evolution of typographic production and consumption conditions and on a corresponding new understanding of the profession. To achieve this, the professorship should develop innovative research and development techniques, acquire its own third-party funding for research projects, and establish national/international transfer initiatives and collaborations, thus contributing significantly to contemporary design and communication practice.
We are seeking an individual with a recognised design background who is able to communicate the fundamental principles, processes and practices of typography and who can integrate these with new forms of media development and negotiation. The field of typography is, in this sense, to be represented from a practical and a conceptual perspective. Content related reflecting is an essential part of the position. The professorship must be aware of the responsibility that research and art bear towards society, making a targeted contribution to the development and design of the Faculty of Art and Design and the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar as a whole.
Applicants must have completed a degree in design that is closely related to the relevant field, have a record of outstanding achievements and experience in university teaching. The candidate should be actively involved in the national and international community, have experience in securing third-party funding and in developing appropriate research, transfer and cooperation initiatives as well as futureoriented study formats. The successful candidate is expected to be able to teach courses in both German and English and to participate in university management. The required language skills in one of the two languages mentioned may be acquired within the first two years after appointment.
Appointment Procedure: The professorship is initially limited to three years. This period may be extended by a further three years following a positive tenure evaluation. Should this be followed by a further positive evaluation after six years, the W1 professorship will be converted into a W3 professorship without an additional job advertisement.
The professorship is to be filled on a full-time basis (employee or civil servant status). However, the advertised job opening is also suitable to be filled by two people simultaneously (shared professorship, job sharing). In this case, a civil servant status is not possible and the employment relationship will be 50 % each. The applicants for a shared professorship submit a joint application and enclose a joint concept for their collaboration. Both candidates must fulfil the recruitment requirements for the position. An additional individual application is possible.
The selection procedure adheres to the regulations outlined in the Thuringian Higher Education Act (ThürHG). The hiring regulations stipulated in § 89 of the Thuringian Higher Education Act (ThürHG) apply. Additional information on the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar can be found at
