In research and teaching, the professorship will focus on the development and validation of concepts for the objective assessment and evaluation of animal welfare in terrestrial farm animals. By considering the scale levels of the individual animal and herd, questions are to be addressed conceptually and methodologically that promote the physical, physiological and emotional health of the animal with husbandry and management approaches and are suitable for harmonising the relevant perspectives of animal owners and society. This is to be achieved through the (further) development of methodological approaches for the assessment and evaluation of specific animal welfare indicators, through the (co-)design of husbandry environments or through the development of specific management processes; special consideration is to be given to the concerns of organic animal husbandry.
The future post holder will offer undergraduate modules on animal husbandry and ethology as well as aspects of animal health in the German-language BSc program "Ökologische Landwirtschaft". At Master's level (German-language MSc program " Ökologische Landwirtschaft " and the English-language MSc programs "Sustainable International Agriculture" and "Agriculture, Ecology and Societies"), method-centered modules on the assessment and evaluation of animal welfare indicators in various animal species are to be developed, as well as teaching units that highlight husbandry environments and approaches that promote animal welfare.
