University Professor of Biochemistry with Focus on Plant-Microbe Interactions
Salary grade: W2 or equivalent reference code: Biochemie Pflanzen-Mikroben
The successful applicant will cover research and teaching in biochemistry with a focus on plant-microbe interactions. The professorship is housed in the Institute of Biology, and the research focus involves overlapping areas of expertise in biochemistry, plant science, and microbiology in order to study interactions between plants and microorganisms.
Appointment requirements are governed by Article 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz,BerlHG).
The successful candidate should have an excellent record of international research activities preferably with specialization in the area of plant-pathogen or plant-symbiont interactions with particular attention to molecular, physiological, and biochemical interactions and/or coevolution within such systems. The applicant should also be familiar with research in biochemistry and cell biology (for example, the dynamics of protein folding and/or protein maturation, structural biology, proteomics, super resolution microscopy, microfluidics). The appointee‘s research should also complement existing and planned partner projects with the goal of collaborating in the future. Furthermore, he or she should have published research in respected journals with international visibility. The successful candidate should have relevant teaching experience at the university level and be able to teach courses, especially biochemistry courses, in German and/or English offered as part of the BSc and MSc degree programs in biology. He or she should also demonstrate experience in acquiring and leading externally funded research projects.
Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Article 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:
The candidate will contribute to existing joint research projects, such as Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 973 „Priming and Memory of Organismic Responses to Stress,“ CRC/Transregio 186 „Molecular Switches: Spatio-temporal Control of Cellular Signal Transmission,“ the Dahlem Center of Plant Sciences (DCPS), and the Berlin Center for Genomics in Biodiversity Research (BeGenDiv), as well as future projects initiated at Freie Universität Berlin. The scope of the professorship is expected to include working closely with biochemists from the Institute of Chemistry and Biochemistry and developing collaborative initiatives together. The candidate should be willing to bring his or her knowledge of German up to a sufficient level within a reasonable amount of time (about three years). The new professor will also be expected to address gender and diversity issues as part of the curriculum.
