The position is primarily located in Berlin-Marienfelde, with teaching at the TU Berlin campus. The appointment is a W2 Professorship following the Berlin Model. The appointment as government employee is initially limited to 5 years, with the intent to transition to an unlimited appointment.
The German Environment Agency (UBA) addresses questions in nearly all areas of environmental protection, with about 1,600 employees at 13 locations. Focus of the section II 3.3 is on water treatment. The section area conducts applied research in water treatment utilizing the experimental and analytical facilities of UBA.

Working field: Responsibilities include the thematic-strategic and direction of personnel of the section II 3.3 "Water Treatment" at the German Environment Agency (UBA). This includes leading and developing of an engaged team as well as participation in research projects, especially the identification of research needs for the conceptual development of water treatment, as well as the practical implementation. This includes, for example, the quantification of treatment efficiency and risk analysis of treatment technologies for biological and chemical pollutants. A unique opportunity lies in the up-scaling as well validation of models using the experimental facilities at the UBA. The initiation of collaborative research projects is desired.
The teaching duties encompass two course hours per week in the area of basic and applied technologies for drinking water treatment considering various source waters, and include the advising of students. Teaching in the B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs of Environmental Science and Technology is partly in English; fluent English language skills is a prerequisite.
In addition, duties of the UBA include the enforcement of §§ 11 and 12 of the drinking water ordinance (Trinkwasserverordnung, TrinkwV) as well as the national and international standardization of treatment materials. This also includes technical advice for decision-makers at federal, state and local levels, information of the public, participation in the development of regulation at the WHO and EU levels – including participation in relevant committees, as well as conceptual support of the Federal Ministry of Health (Bundesministerium fu¨r Gesundheit - BMG) in the revision of the EU-drinking water ordinance and its application in Germany, as well as duties related to the infection protection ordinance for drinking and bathing water.
Requirements: Candidates must fulfil the requirements for appointment at the professor level in compliance with § 100 BerlHG (Berlin Higher Education Act) [information sheet available by request], including a completed academic education in environmental science or engineering, treatment technologies, water chemistry or a comparable discipline, qualified achievements in research (doctorate and additional academic achievements), including high-impact papers in peerre-viewed journals, a minimum of 5 years of experience, and didactic qualifications, demonstrated by teaching experience and shown in a teaching portfolio (for further information see TUB Website, quick access 144242).
We are looking for an internationally recognized individual with a clear profile in the area of water treatment. You are knowledgeable of the analysis of water quality, physical-chemical and biological treatment technologies, and public drinking water supply in general. Your research experience is primarily in the experimental field in the area of water treatment and you have experience serving on national and international committees. Preferably, you have experience in project management to be able to contribute to the development of the research focus of the UBA and the faculty, and you can integrate your research into existing and future collaborative projects of the faculty.
You are established as independent and excellent researcher in the area of drinking water treatment, with an international reputation, as demonstrated through individual and collaborative research projects, third party funding, presentations at conferences as well as high-impact publications. You have experience in basic and applied research and have addressed known and emerging questions/problems. You have substantial experience and interest in cooperation with other researchers. Your thematic research focus is suitable for collaboration between UBA and relevant speciality areas at TU Berlin, the Institute of Environmental Technology and other facilities of TU Berlin, and can contribute to their development.
You have substantial leadership experience (incl. modern leadership instruments, specific to the duties relevant to personnel, technical focus and resources), a goal-, quality- and team-oriented leadership style, are competent in gender and diversity issues, and are willing to work based on the mission statements of UBA (www.umweltbundesamt.de) and TU Berlin (www.tu-berlin.de), responsibly and interdisciplinary with others. You have a proven track record of experience and participation in national and, if applicable, international research and the development projects. You are capable of strategic thinking and action, analytic and interdisciplinary work as well as communicating results and their evaluation, including communicating to the general public.
