The Department for “Neurobiology of Ageing” headed by director Dr. Anne Schaefer is looking for a full time

Senior Molecular Biologist (m/f/div)
(Job code 33-2022)

The Schaefer department “Neurobiology of Ageing” at the MPI for Biology of Ageing in Cologne investigates the cellular and molecular mechanisms of brain aging. Our research focuses on three major areas: 1) the role of microglia, the innate immune cells of the CNS, in neuron function, longevity and neurodegeneration, 2) the mechanism of energy expenditure by neurons and its role in neuron longevity, 3) the impact of peripheral virus infection and inflammatory conditions on brain function and ageing.
We are looking for a senior scientist who is highly trained in a broad range of cellular and molecular biology techniques. The successful applicant will be expected to use and/or establish new molecular techniques (analysis of DNA and chromatin modifications and transcription in a cell-type specific fashion), train lab members, and work on own projects in the above described fields. The applicant will join an enthusiastic and collaborative team in an outstanding scientific environment and therefore is expected to be a team player as well. The position is initially limited to two years, but with the option to become a permanent one.

Qualifications

The successful applicant is required to hold a master’s degree / diploma or M.D. / Ph.D. in biology, biochemistry, or a related field. In addition, several years of experience in laboratory work and techniques of molecular and cellular biology are expected for a successful application. The working language is English; knowledge of German is not required.

Research Environment

The Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing, Cologne, was founded in 2008 with the aim to understand fundamental mechanisms of healthy ageing in various model systems. The institute is part of a network of research institutions in the Cologne-Bonn area dedicated to research on ageing and age-related disease, constituting a vibrant and collaborative environment with state-of-the-art facilities for research. Currently we host > 300 employees from > 30 different nations.

Our Offer

The Max Planck Society is committed to employ more disabled individuals and especially encourages them to apply. We also seek to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and particularly encourage them to apply.
