Scientific Employee (f/m/d) at the institute of Microbiology in the faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
At the institute of Microbiology in the faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf a position as a
(65 %, pay grade 13 TV-L)
is to be filled starting in October 2020. The employment is limited until 31st Dec. 2023. It is a qualification position in the sense of the Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG), which is to promote the scientific qualification of the employee.
The advertised project is integrated into CRC 1208 and the associated graduate research training group "MBTrain". We are studying a novel process of unconventional secretion using the model organism Ustilago maydis. In one aspect of our research we aim to understand the underlying molecular mechanism by use of cell biological and biochemical methods (e.g. fluorescence microscopy, GUVs, structural biology). In another aspect of our research we use unconventional secretion in a biotechnological approach to export heterologous proteins such as nanobodies or Corona antibodies. Modifications like N-glycosylation that normally occur in the endomembrane system do not take place during unconventional secretion route. Thus, the activity of heterologous proteins is not disturbed by non-native modifications.
The aim of the project will be the comprehensive cell biological and biochemical characterisation of unconventional secretion. The focus will be a novel factor indispensable for unconventional secretion. A wide spectrum of methods will be applied using cell biological-microscopic as well as (membrane-) biochemical techniques. Apart from structure/function analyses to determine the role of the protein for the secretion event, interaction partners should be identified by "proximity labeling". We also expect a willingness to participate in the teaching obligations of the Institute for Microbiology.
above-average degree (M.Sc./Diploma) in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry or equivalent fields
experimental experience in molecular biology, biochemistry and/or microbiology
knowledge in membrane biology and a strong interest in biochemical problems would be of advantage
very high motivation to do experimental work as well as an ability for independent literature search and scientific writing in English
excellent knowledge of English and an affinity to teamwork
The pay scale grouping will be, depending on the personal qualification of the applicant, up to pay grade 13 TV-L.
In principle, the employment can also take place part-time, if no compelling official reasons are opposed in an individual case.
Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf aims at increasing the percentage of employed women. Applications from women will therefore be given preference in cases of equal aptitude, ability and professional achievements unless there are exceptional reasons for choosing another applicant. Applications from suitably qualified severely disabled persons or disabled persons regarded as being of equal status according to Book IX of the German Social Code (SGB – Soziales Gesetzbuch) are encouraged.
