The Transregional Collaborative Research Center CRC/TRR 227 at Freie Universität Berlin (leading) and Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg has just obtained funding for a
second period from 2022 to 2025. The CRC/TRR 227 research focuses at a fundamental understanding of ultrafast spin dynamics, thereby laying the foundations for spin-based information
technology that can be operated at THz clock rates. Our goals are to gather and develop detailed knowledge about spin dynamics and the concomitant couplings of electron, phonon, and
spin degrees of freedom on ultrafast time scales spanning the range between 1 fs and 10 ps. Ultimately, this knowledge will lead to new spintronic functionalities and devices. In
total, 17 scientific projects headed by 28 principal investigators team up their research activities on ultrafast dynamics of magnetic order and ultrafast spin currents.
The postdoctoral researcher is expected to perform theoretical investigations as well as to do computationally-based modelling within the research area of theoretical condensed matter physics, with a special focus on ultrafast magnetism, such as modelling of ultrafast spin currents, theory for light-induced dynamical processes, THz pulse emission, ultrafast spectroscopy and theory for current-induced spin dynamics.
The research tasks include the development of theoretical models and computer simulation programs to model ultrafast non-equilibrium spin currents and high-frequency spin dynamics in antiferromagnetic and topological spintronic materials, as well as to simulate THz emission from these materials. Various computer programs (like Density-Functional Theory and spin dynamics codes) will be used in the modelling of non-equilibrium spin currents and induced spin dynamics.
The project is part of the CRC/TRR 227 “Ultrafast spin dynamics” and is headed by Prof. Peter Oppeneer, who is based at Uppsala University, Sweden, and is one of the Mercator Fellows of the TRR 227. The successful candidate is offered the possibility to work in an exciting modern research area in condensed matter physics and will have opportunities to interact and collaborate with leading experimental and theoretical groups in Berlin, Halle (Saale), Germany, and Uppsala, Sweden.
Master's degree (or Diplom) in Physics, PhD degree in Physics
The applicant is further expected to have excellent capabilities to perform high-level research, as demonstrated through publications in peer-reviewed journals. Good communication skills both orally and in written English, and also the ability to work independently, are essential.
The applicant is expected to have a PhD degree in theoretical or computational physics. A strong background in theoretical condensed matter physics is desirable. Experience with large-scale computer simulations is also desirable, as well as the ability to perform computer code development.
