MATH+, the Berlin Mathematics Research Center (
www.mathplus.de), is a cross-institutional and transdisciplinary Cluster of Excellence of the three Berlin universities. It sets out to advance mathematics and its interdisciplinary power with the aim of achieving progress on grand challenges in a wide variety of application fields. The Combinatorics and Graph Theory group at Freie Universität Berlin (
http://www.mi.fu-berlin.de/en/math/groups/geokomb/index.html) consists of researchers from mathematics with expertise in different aspects of extremal and probabilistic combinatorics and graph theory. The IOL Group (
https://iol.zib.de) is situated at the intersection of Machine Learning and Optimization.
Job description:
The advertised position is available within the MATH+ research project "Learning Extremal Structures in Combinatorics". The successful candidate will work on the interface of Combinatorics and Machine Learning. The goal, on the one hand, is to use combinatorial frameworks to investigate different machine learning methods, and, on the other hand, to gain insights into problems of Extremal Combinatorics and Positional Games via approaches from Machine Learning.
The research will be conducted in close collaboration with scientists from Freie Universität Berlin (FUB) and the Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB), with the position being integrated in the Combinatorics and Graph Theory group of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Freie Universität Berlin (
http://www.mi.fu-berlin.de/en/math/groups/geokomb/index.html).
The position can be filled either on the postdoctoral or the PhD-student level. The intended project start is April 2021 but a later start may be possible.
Requirements:
- Master degree in Mathematics or related field.
Desirable:
- strong background in Combinatorics and Graph Theory
- experience with algorithms and enthusiasm for implementation (advanced programming skills in Python and/or related programming languages)
- very good written and spoken English Qualified candidates are asked to submit a short cover letter outlining professional background, a detailed CV, list of publications (for postdoc candidates), and arrange three letters of recommendation to be sent by the reference writers in case applying for a postdoc position and two letters in case of applying for a PhD-studentship. Please include in reference code in the subject line when applying via Email and provide your documents in one PDF document, if possible.
For further information, please contact Mr. Prof. Dr. Tibor Szabó (
