Research assistant (f/m/d) Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry or related
with 1/2-part-time job, limited up to 3,5 years, Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L FU Kennung: 21240100 /15 /19
Who we are:
The Molecular Ecology group investigates interactions between plants and herbivorous insects. Our research covers different scales of organization from
interactions between organisms to molecular physiology, and it utilizes a vast array of methodology including field experiments, behavioral experiments,
chemical analytics, transcriptional profiling and genetic manipulation of plants.
The position entails the option to obtain a doctoral degree and will focus on research on a recently discovered form of extrafloral nectar. This nectar
attracts ants for indirect defense and is produced from herbivore-inflicted wounds by a plant that does not have any nectaries. The project investigates
the mechanisms of this nectar secretion in order to better understand the evolution of nectar secretion in the long-term. Work will be a mixture of field-
and greenhouse experiments, behavioral assays and chemical as well as molecular methodology.
An advanced degree (Diploma or Master) in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry or a related subject is mandatory.
Successful applicants must
Be able to work independently and reliable in a research project
Have an interest in work with plants and insects
Be willing to be involved in teaching activities with undergraduate students
It is of advantage to have:
A solid understanding of molecular standard lab practices (e. g DNA/RNA extraction, qRT-PCR, Enzyme activity assays) and/or behavioral ecology
Experience in genetic modification of plants (vector cloning, RNA-interference, CRISPR-Cas9, plant tissue culture)
Knowledge in chemical analytics (liquid- and gas chromatography, mass spectrometry)
Experience in statistical analyses (multivariate statistics, R-programming) and capability to designs, conduct and analyze multifactorial experiments in an independent manner
What to expect:
A motivated team of multifaceted scientists
An ambitious, interdisciplinary scientific environment with flat hierarchy and individual supervision
A structured graduate school with a diverse course catalogue within the Dahlem Centre of Plant Sciences DCPS or the Berlin-Brandenburgisches Institut für Biodiversitätsforschung - BBIB
An exciting work environment in the Berlin South with freedom to develop personal strengths and interests
