The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with internationally competitive, interdisciplinary
focus areas in research and teaching. The Faculty of Engineering Science at the University of Bayreuth and the Fraunhofer
Institute for Silicate Research (ISC) at its Center for High Temperature Materials and Design (HTL) in Bayreuth are currently
seeking to jointly appoint a
Professor (m/f) of Thermal Processing Technology (pay grade: W3)
This is a civil service position initially limited to a fixed term of five years. Upon positive evaluation, the incumbent may
be offered permanent employment. The HTL’s research priorities include the development of materials and components for use in
high-temperature environments, designing thermal processes, and measuring material properties at high temperatures. Special
emphasis is placed on improving the energy efficiency of industrial heat-treating processes.
Applicants should represent the field of thermal processing technology in research and teaching and should already have an
excellent record of relevant engineering projects. He or she will complement the expertise already present at the Faculty of
Engineering Science and the Center for High Temperature Materials and Design in important ways and will also develop new concepts.
Examples include heat exchangers, high-temperature filters, high-temperature reactor systems, heating concepts, insulation strategies,
and control engineering. Innovative systems for optimized heat treatment along with designs for industrial furnaces are also to be
developed. The primary object in this connection is to improve the efficiency and environmental balance of thermal processing technology and systems.
The successful applicant will make advances to the field of thermal processing technology by way of his or her research contributions.
It is hoped that the incumbent will engage in joint research projects with other institutes at the University to unlock the available
research potential. He or she will play an active role in shaping the teaching of degree programmes in engineering in an appropriate manner.
We are currently seeking applicants who are able to assume responsibility for acquisition and research management in third-party projects,
whether publically funded or carried out together with industrial partners. Responsibilities include setting up and managing a group as
well as coordinating and supervising staff members. Relevant experience in obtaining external funding and carrying out third-party projects
is thus just as important as management experience.
The professor will be expected to play a leading role in the cooperation between the University of Bayreuth and the Fraunhofer Center for
High Temperature Materials and Design. Within Fraunhofer, the incumbent will report to the Director of the HTL and will also be expected
to assume additional management functions at the HTL.
Requirements for this position (according to Article 7 and Article 10 para 3 BayHSchPG) are a university degree, doctoral degree,
Habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification), and proven excellence in teaching. Evidence of equivalent scholarly
achievement, for example as a junior professor or in a non-university environment, will also be considered. The ability to teach in
the English language is expected. Only applicants who are 51 years of age or younger can be hired as civil servants (Article 10 para 3 BayHSchPG).
