The Faculty of Sociology invites applications for a
Professorship for Social Sciences and its Didactics (W2 or W3)
The successful applicant will represent the field in all programmes of the faculty of
sociology and is coordinator of the Master of Education GymGe and Master of
Education HRG as well as the BA Social Sciences programmes. Cooperation and work
in the university-wide committees, in particular the Bielefeld School of Education
(BiSEd), and research projects in teacher training at Bielefeld University are
The candidate is internationally recognized in the didactics of social sciences and in
the sociology of economics. It is required that one of the main areas of teaching and
research is in the field of didactics and socio-economic education.
The candidate is expected to have experience in the acquisition of third-party
funding. Participation in the core fields of the faculty as well as in future joint
research projects is also expected.
The W2 position is limited to five years but with a tenure track option; an agreement
on objectives will be established after the appointment. After a positive evaluation in
the final year, the position will be changed to a permanent one at the level of W3. In
exceptional cases, the tenure evaluation is already possible after three years. This
exception has to be well justified by extraordinary scientific achievements and a
respective contribution to strengthening the profile of the university. The applicants
for the W2 position should have developed a promising research profile during their
time as postdoc and have the pedagogical and personal qualifications for the job of
professor. Family leave will be taken into account in the selection process.
Requirements according to § 36 HG NRW are a university degree in a pertinent
subject, competence in scientific research evidenced by the quality of the doctoral
degree, additional scientific achievements, which will be evaluated exclusively and
thoroughly during the appointment process, as well as the pedagogical qualification,
which is either documented by a respective certificate or evaluated during the
selection process. Professional experience in school teaching is welcome. The
position can also be appointed as a permanent W3 professorship.
