The Faculty of Philosophy and History, Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, at Goethe University, Frankfurt welcomes
applications for the following position as of 1 April 2020:
Professor (W2, tenure track) in Social and Cultural Anthropology (Ethnologie)
The initial tenure track appointment is for six years according to § 64 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Hessen (HHG).
The professorship is funded by the Bund-Länder-Programm zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses (BLP). Upon positive
evaluation, the incumbent will be promoted to a permanent position at a higher level (W3). Applications are invited from post-doctoral
researchers in the early stages of their careers. According to § 64, para. 3 HHG the doctorate should not date back to more than
four years and should be complemented by further scientific achievements. The initial designated salary for the position is based on
“W2” on the German University Scale or equivalent.
The professorship is within the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology (Institut für Ethnologie). Applicants are required to
hold a PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology (Ethnologie) and a proven track record of international visibility. Applicants are expected to cover
the main areas of social and cultural anthropology in teaching and to be distinguished in at least one area of research based on extensive regional fieldwork experience.
The application should indicate clearly, how the applicant’s research profile will contribute to strengthening the research field “Anthropology
of Islam” and connected research activities at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology and at the Goethe University. Compelling experience
in teaching and in procuring third-party funds, excellent publications and the ability to work in a team are also expected The successful candidate will be
required to participate in the university’s academic self-administration. Applications of scientists from abroad are explicitly requested. The ability
to teach in English and then subsequently after two years in German is expected.
