Due to success within the "Bund-Länder-Programm zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses" (German tenure track programme), the Faculty of Sociology invites applications for either a
W1 Professorship with Tenure Track to W3 or
a W2 Temporary Professorship with Tenure Track to W3 for Sociology of Global/
Transnational Mobility and Migration
We seek to appoint a sociologist working in the area of transnational and global mobility, with a profile featuring empirically grounded research on mobility and migration in areas such as social protection, environmental change, politics, and related fields (ideally North-South and South-South comparisons or connectivities).
The applicant should demonstrate willingness to closely cooperate with colleagues currently working on related issues within the Sociology Faculty and with other relevant faculties such as Public Health or Law. She or he should have a significant research plan with potential to attract funding by major research sponsors such as the European Research Council or national research councils; readiness to participate in large-scale collaborative projects within the Faculty and university is expected. The successful candidate will teach in all programmes of the Faculty, including the International Track of the MA in Sociology.
Prerequisites according to § 36 HG NRW are a university degree in a related subject, and competence in scientific research as evidenced by the quality of the doctoral degree. Additional scientific achievements and pedagogical qualifications/teaching experiences will be evaluated thoroughly during the appointment process.
In the case of an appointment to a W1 professorship, the post is limited to a period of three years with a further three-year option depending on a positive interim evaluation. A positive tenure evaluation in the final year will then lead to a W3 professorship. The W2 appointment is limited to five years with a target agreement being formulated after the appointment. A positive evaluation in the final year will then lead to a W3 professorship. The interim/tenure evaluations are regulated in the statutes for W1 professorships with tenure track/W2 professorships with tenure track.
W1/W2 tenure tracks are a firmly established equal-opportunity employment variant at Bielefeld University. Tenure track professors are offered a target-group-specific personnel development programme providing support when first coming to Bielefeld, in preparing for the interim evaluation, in preparing for the tenure evaluation, and in organizing – after a positive evaluation – the transitional phase to a W3 professorship.
Applications should comprise: cover letter, CV with academic career, list of publications with the five most important highlighted, a two-page document detailing the applicant‘s plans for research and teaching, a list of research activities and external funding acquired to date, list of courses taught in the past five years, and other evidence of teaching qualifications.
