Professorship (W1) for Exploratory Natural Products Genomics (Tenure-Track)
Published(78 days ago)
Deadline for applications(46 days ago)
Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität FrankfurtFrankfurt am Main
As part of the programme for promoting cutting-edge research initiatives and developing scientific-economic excellence in the federal state of Hesse (LOEWE),
the newly established LOEWE Centre for Translational Biodiversity Genomics (LOEWE-TBG,
https://tbg.senckenberg.de/) invites applications for a joint appointment as professor at the Johann
Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, Faculty of Biological Sciences together with the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung (SGN) in Frankfurt/Main.
This professorship is funded by the Tenure Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States (BLP-TT).
LOEWE-TBG is a joint venture of the SGN, Goethe University Frankfurt, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen and Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology
IME. LOEWE-TBG aims to combine genome research of a taxonomically broad subset of organisms with the development of application-oriented services and products. The focus
lies on the expansion of biodiversity research to the genomic basis of biological diversity to make the newly generated resources accessible for societal demand-driven applied research.
Goethe University offers the following position as civil servant or public employee:
Professorship (W1, tenure track) for Exploratory Natural Products Genomics
The initial tenure track appointment as Assistant Professor (civil servant or public employee) is for six years (§ 64 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Hessen (HHG)).
Upon positive evaluation, the incumbent will be promoted to a permanent position at a higher level (W2). According to § 64 (3) HHG candidates should not have obtained their PhD at
Goethe University Frankfurt or should have worked as a researcher at an external institution for at least two years after their PhD. The doctorate should not date back to more than
The announced professorship is to be placed within the field of molecular-biochemical research of natural products. The focus will be on experimental genomics of natural products,
a field in which genomic information is essential for the biochemical characterization, modification and/or heterologous production of natural product classes (e. g. ribosomal or
non-ribosomal peptides, polyketides or terpenes). These natural products can originate from the microbiome of multicellular organisms or from microorganisms, for example, fungi,
cyanobacteria or anaerobic bacteria. In addition to the provision of new natural products and the study of the underlying biochemical mechanisms, the natural function of these
compounds could also become a focus of research. We expect an active participation in LOEWE-TBG, and welcome collaboration in other research foci of the Faculty of Biosciences
(including LOEWE research initiatives MegaSyn and DynaMem, Research Unit 2251). The candidate will contribute to the teachings of Bachelor and Master students of the Faculty of
Biological Sciences (Institute for Molecular Biosciences) where appropriate. An active participation in academic self-administration is expected.
Goethe University and SGN offer a diverse and dynamic research environment for genomic (biodiversity) research. We are therefore looking for a resourceful person of high integrity
who will conduct innovative research on the mentioned topics and develop the research priorities of LOEWE-TBG through networking with all project partners. In addition to the leadership
of the respective research group, extensive experience in attracting external funding, publication activities of high international standard and the ability to deliver excellent research-oriented
teaching in the fields of genetics, evolution or functional cell biology at all academic levels are expected.
In addition to the general legal requirements for employment, candidates must have a university degree in natural sciences, pedagogical aptitude and an outstanding doctoral degree.
The designated salary for the position is based on the German university pay scale. Goethe University is committed to increasing the proportion of female faculty and therefore especially
encourages women to apply. Applications of scientists from abroad are explicitly requested. Severely disabled applicants with equal qualification and aptitude will be given preferential
consideration. For further information regarding the general conditions for professorship appointments and the "BLP-TT", please see:
Researchers with a proven track record in research and teaching are invited to submit their application by 31 August 2019, including the following documents: curriculum vitae
including scientific and professional career, complete list of publications, detailed description of teaching experience with information on the respective contributions and teaching evaluations,
pdf files of five key publications, planned research priorities [max. 3 pages], overview of acquired third-party funding (with a detailed list of funds actually acquired), references, and copies
of important transcripts and certificates. All documents should be combined into a single pdf file and sent by email to the Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences, Prof. Dr. Sven Klimpel,
For more information, please contact the Director General of SGN, Prof. Dr. Volker Mosbrugger (email@example.com)
or the Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences Prof. Dr. Sven Klimpel (firstname.lastname@example.org). For more scientific information
