The Faculty of Protestant Theology (Fachbereich Evangelische Theologie)
of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main
invites applications for the following position as a civil servant or
public employee starting at the earliest possible date:
Professorship (W1) Church History
The appointment as Assistant Professor (civil servant or public
employee) is for six years (§ 64 of the Higher Education Act of the
State of Hessen (Hessisches Hochschulgesetz - HHG)) and subject
to a mid-term review.
According to § 64 (3) HHG candidates should not have obtained their
PhD at Goethe University Frankfurt or should have worked as a
researcher at an external institution for at least two years after their
PhD. The doctorate should not date back to more than four years.
The successful candidate is expected to represent the subject of
Church History with a focus on the Early Modern Period, the Modern
Era and the Reformation Period. Candidates should have a convincing
record of academic publications in the field of Church History. A PhD
in theology is a requirement for the appointment. He or she must be
a member of the Protestant Church. In addition, concepts for future
research projects and experience in the acquisition of third-party
funding are expected.
In addition to a study program qualifying for the Ministry and a
Master’s Degree in Protestant Theology, the Faculty of Protestant
Theology offers teacher training courses at all levels as well as BA/
MA study programs in Religious Studies and Philosophy of Religion.
It also officially cooperates with the Institute for Protestant Theology
at the Justus Liebig University of Giessen. The professorship is also
involved in teacher training; experience and concepts for teaching
subject content in schools are welcome.
The successful candidate is expected to engage in close cooperation
within the department and to contribute to the interreligious and
interdisciplinary research activities initiated by it. Furthermore,
he or she will be required to participate in the academic selfadministration
and knowledge transfer activities. In addition, we
expect an active participation in the Goethe Graduate Academy
(GRADE), the Goethe University’s structured doctoral program in the
area of the Humanities and Social Sciences.
The designated salary for the position is based on the German
university pay scale or equivalent. Goethe University is committed
