PROFESSORSHIP IN MECHANICAL AND INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING; Industrial logistics IV-62/18
The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) announces a
vacant Professorship in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering; Industrial logistics. The department has approximately 190 employees
and includes the following research groups: Mechanical and Industrial Engineering; Design, Analysis and Manufacturing (DAM); Materials;
Production Systems; Production Management; Project and Quality Management; Reliability, Availability, Maintenance and Safety (RAMS).
In addition to involvement in applied research, the department is responsible for education at BSc, MSc and PhD level within mechanical
and industrial engineering, and basic and applied research in close collaboration with industry. The professorship is part of the
Production Management research group.
The Professor will have responsibility for education and research in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering with a special emphasis on Industrial
Logistics. The primary focus will be on developing knowledge on how digitalization and Industry 4.0 provide new challenges and opportunities in
the development of industrial logistics systems.
The Professor will be responsible for building a portfolio of research projects. S/he must obtain national and international (EU) funding,
supervise doctoral candidates and publish research in peer-reviewed journals. The department is seeking outstanding candidates with high
academic ambitions, productivity and quality. The candidate must document:
a PhD degree within Industrial Engineering, Operations Management or Industrial Logistics or equivalent in a relevant topic;
academic achievements within the topics of the Professorship;
a proven track record in initiating and managing research and technology projects (e.g. EU and Research Council of Norway) in collaboration with industry;
experience from national or international industry in relevant area(s);
teaching experience and capabilities from recognized educational institution(s);
a network in academia and industry, particularly relevant to NTNU.
The applicant must document scientific expertise and a publication track record within relevant topics. The ability to supervise and initiate research is of particular importance. Pedagogical skills are essential and the evaluation will be based on documentation of pedagogical education/training, presentation of academic work, experience from teaching and supervising students, as well as other pedagogical matters. The education in NTNU is expected to apply ICT-based learning methods and project-based teaching, and experience in these areas will be acknowledged. The work model of the research group is team-based, and documented experience and skills in this respect is important.
The successful applicant for a professorship must be able to document his/her extensive disciplinary qualifications in important fields within the discipline. His/her individual work must document scientific expertise in one or more parts of the discipline, particularly the specialist fields the Professorship has specific responsibility for. Weight will be placed on the ability to supervise and initiate research and development work.
Weight will be placed on pedagogical skills. The evaluation of the candidate will be based on documented pedagogical material, including pedagogical education/training, the presentation of academic work, experience from supervising masters-level students and doctoral candidates, and teaching as well as other pedagogical matters. The evaluation will consider both the quality and the scope.
Academic staff who are employed without having a formal pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching and are unable to document equivalent qualifications, are required to successfully complete a recognized course that gives a pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching within two years of taking the appointment. The University offers such courses.
The applicants that have been short-listed will be invited for interviews and a demonstration of their pedagogical ability, usually in the form of a trial lecture.
The Professor is to be jointly responsible for disciplinary matters together with other academic staff in the Department. The Professor is required to participate
in teaching activities in accordance with the relevant curriculum and assist in further developing the teaching programme, including continuing education. The
Professor is to supervise masters students, research fellows and doctoral candidates in his/her discipline. The Professor must agree to participate in administrative work.
The Professor is obliged to follow the regulations that concern changes and developments within the discipline and/or the organizational changes concerning activities at the University.
It is assumed that newly-employed staff in academic positions who do not already master a Scandinavian language are to obtain within three years knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at an equivalent standard to level three in the Norwegian for Foreigners courses provided at the Department of Applied Linguistics. The University provides such courses.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.

The position follows code 1013, and is remunerated with a minimum gross salary from NOK 605 400 per annum. Normally the position is remunerated with a minimum gross salary from NOK 617 400 to NOK 901 700 per annum. There will be a 2 % deduction to The Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.

Academic work - published or unpublished - that has relevance to the evaluation of the applicant's qualifications by the evaluation committee (not more than 10 such submissions).
A description of all the academic work that the applicant feels is most significant and that he/she feels the evaluation committee should pay particular attention to.
A list of all publications with bibliographical references.
Joint work will be evaluated. If it is difficult to identify the contributions from individuals in a joint piece of work, applicants are to enclose a short descriptive summary of what he/she did in this connection.
