The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) creates knowledge for a better world and solutions that can change everyday life.
Faculty of Natural Sciences
Department of Biotechnology and Food Science
Professorship/ associate professorship in biochemistry
Department of Biotechnology and Food Science in the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology has now a vacant professorship in biochemistry.
Information about the department
The Department has at present 11 professors, 13 associate professors, 4 adjunct professors and 59 PhD-students, postdoctoral fellows and research scientists. The Department has a national role and responsibility for research and teaching in biotechnology and food science and a wide range of expertise. We have a special responsibility of teaching in the disciplines of biochemistry and microbiology. The scientific activity is organized in the four main areas of Biopolymers and Biomaterials, Food Science, Microbial Biotechnology, and Analysis and Control of Microbial Systems. The department focus on developing integrated research groups where researchers and lecturers within related fields can establish strong research and teaching units. The Department of Biotechnology and Food Science is the host for the national center for biotechnology training, research and innovation: Center for Digital Life Norway https://www.ntnu.edu/dln
Relevant background for the position
We are seeking candidates with competence that will complement and augment research programs in one of the research groups at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science.
The group Analysis and Control of Microbial Systems has a focus on microbial processes in aquatic systems. This includes production, conversion, and bioavailability of organic matter and nitrogen compounds in natural and applied systems. Applicants with a background or interest in characterization of dissolved organic matter in aquatic systems is a particularly interesting extension of the competence of this group.
The group of Biopolymers and Biomaterials focuses around Biopolymer Engineering, with particular emphasis on polysaccharides and polysaccharide modifying proteins. Research activities cover all aspects from biosynthesis and structural modifications, to physical, biological/biomedical and industrial properties. The group has the ambition to be at the cutting edge in its area, and collaborates widely both nationally and internationally. Applicants with a background in physical biochemistry relevant to this group‘s research are particularly interesting.
The group of Food Science mainly works with research related to quality of raw materials and changes during processing. The group sees the need to strengthen competence on nutrition as well as biochemistry and biochemical processes in food raw materials.
The group of Microbial Biotechnology is performing basic experimental and theoretical research on microorganisms to increase the understanding of their structure and function both at molecular and cellular levels. The knowledge is applied to develop new biologically based production processes. Members of the group work with a variety of microbial model systems to study different bioprocesses for production of many different compounds by using various experimental and theoretical tools and approaches. Applicants with relevant background in microbial bioprocesses, including microbial strain development and systems biology level analysis, are in particular interesting.
