For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:

PhD student X-ray microscopy and tomography

Limited: 3 years | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: FSDO008/2022 | Deadline: 25.05.2022 | Full-time/Part-time
DESY, with more than 2700 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.
We are currently seeking a motivated and proactive researcher to join our new project based within the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC1441) TrackAct - "Tracking the Active Site in Heterogeneous Catalysis for Emission Control". The CRC is coordinated by KIT, in close collaboration with DESY and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) (http://www.trackact.kit.edu). Within the TrackAct project and DESY you will apply new and emerging X-ray analytical methods at the synchrotron light source PETRA III to analyse functional materials applied in catalytic emissions control. Modern emissions control technologies rely on structured catalytic convertors, which have hierarchical features down to nanometer scale (e.g. pore networks). As the structure and function of such materials are closely related, applying X-ray imaging methods can reveal important localised information about the structure-function relations and therefore assist in the generation of more effective catalysts. To achieve this, you will employ X-ray microscopy and tomography with a particular focus on X-ray ptychography or scanning diffraction imaging.

About your role:

  • Learn to harness advanced X-ray imaging tools such as tomography, ptychography and fluorescence for the study of samples used in catalytic emissions control
  • Prepare research proposals, perform experiments at synchrotron radiation sources together with the project partners
  • Perform efficient data analysis on multimodal imaging and spectroscopy data in order to visualize the structure and function of catalyst samples

Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. We attach particular importance to appreciative cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time and job-sharing. You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a job ticket at both locations.

About you:

  • Master's degree in Physics or related field
  • Experience with programming languages (Python, C++, etc.)
  • Experience with X-ray analytical methods, particularly X-ray microscopy, including experimental skills and data analysis
  • Experience with other spectroscopic, diffraction, or imaging characterisation tools is an advantage
  • Willingness to support collaboration partners and group colleagues during synchrotron measurement campaigns
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in an international and multi-disciplinary team with English as working language
