Salary group 13 TVöD
Temporary contract for 3 years
Full time / suitable as part-time employment
The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry.
We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our
work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.
The aim of the project “
Combining physics- and data-based models for 3D concrete printing – process optimization and safety assessment“is to develop a
digital twin for extrusion-based 3D printing. For that, a numerical model of printed concrete covering the time dependent material behavior (hydration, thixotropy, plasticity, etc.)
will be derived and implemented in the OpenSource Software FEniCS. The virtual model will be calibrated and verified in automatic and reproducible manner by measurement data. Joining
the virtual model with the real process will lead to a framework for optimization regarding the design’s safety and robustness.
The project is a cooperation between
division 7.7 “Modelling and Simulation”, 7.4 “Technology of Construction Materials” and S.3 “eScience” of BAM as well as the TU Eindhoven,
where the PhD takes place.
We are looking for talented people to join us.
Your responsibilities include:
- Implementation of an elasto-plastic material model (e.g. Mohr-Coulomb) with time dependent material parameters simulating the structural build-up of printing concrete
- Linking the model with a hydration model
- Developing and coordination of a measurement data basis for material characterization
- Model calibration and validation including uncertainties
- Developing and implementation of the interface between numerical model and real printing process as well as stochastic process optimization
- Presentation and publication of the results in research journals as well as on national and international conferences
- Interdisciplinary cooperation and transfer with national and international research groups
Your qualifications:
- Good university degree (diploma/master) in engineering or similar
- Very good experiences in technical mechanics and finite element method in the context of structural mechanics
- Experience in the implementation of FE-software (e.g. implementation of material routines, time integration methods or element formulations)
- Programming skills , especially with Python
- Interest in developing data basis for structuring and storing of measurement data and model parameter estimation
- Good written and spoken English skills (German skills welcome)
- Goal-oriented and structured way of working, initiative/commitment, and ability to work in a team/willingness to cooperate as well as presentations and publication ability
- Good communication and information behavior
We offer:
- Interdisciplinary research at the interface of politics, economics and society
- Work in national and international networks with universities, research institutes and industrial companies
- Outstanding facilities and infrastructure
- Flexible working hours and mobile working
