Hydrogen will play a key role in decarboninzing our society and in sustaining our future. Biophotovoltaics (BPV), which exploits the natural oxygen photosystem in a bioelectrochemcial system, aims to deliver a sustainable solution for hydrogen production in the future. It provides unique benefits in terms of the energy and resource demands and it can potentially make H2 production as a carbon-sink process as the oxygentic photomicroorganism (e.g. cyanobacteria) use CO2 as the carbon source for growth and maintainance. Within the newly BMBF-funded Nachwuchsgruppenprojekt BioPV4H2, we aim to gain a holistic understanding of the BPV process from both biological and technological aspects, and thus to promote rational design and development of this technique for future application. To realize the proposed ambitious goals, I am seeking an enthusiastic student to fill a PhD position funded by this project. The main task of this position is to identify and engineer the membrane transporter for redox chemical, in order to facilitate the electron flux from the cells to the external electron sink. The successful candidate will be supervised by an international team with leading expertise in multiple disciplines, and will have the support for external skill trainings and for networking in national and international conferences.
PhD researcher (f/m/x) on the cross-membrane transportation of redox chemicals in Synechocystis
Working time: 65 % TVöD 13 (23.35 hours per week), expected to start from February 2023 but no later than July 2023, limited to 4 years.
The successful candidate will be supervised by a strong international interdiscinplinary team, and will have the opportunity for a research visit to our partner’s lab in Spain (Prof. Victor de Lorenzo’s lab).
With all the support, you are expected to complete the following tasks:
Identify the membrane transporter for target molecule using e.g. CRISPRi and/or omics tools;
Developing and applying synthetic biology approaches to improve the cross-membrane transportation of the target molecule;
Characterizing and quantifying the microbial genotype and phenotype using different analytic tools;
Communicating with our project partners to develop research strategy to achieve the project milestones;
Presenting project progress at national and international scientific conferences;
Writing progress report, and publishing project results in high-ranked scientific journals.
M.S. in molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry or related area;
Experience in synthetic biology methods and strain engineering of cyanobacteria or microalgae, or other bacteria;
Familiar with general molecular biology work, e.g. PCR, western blot, etc;
Experience with CRISPR or CRISPRi tools will be a bonus;
Knowledge in quantitative biology using bioassays, omics and/or microscopy-based tools will be an asset;
Excellent communication and team-working skills;
High self-motivation and the willingness for scientific work in an interdisciplinary project;
Proficient in English speaking and writing.
