The institute’s Atmospheric Processors section conducts research on atmospheric remote sensing with infrared and ultraviolet spectrometers. Research on the mathematical and physical basics of atmospheric remote sensing is focused on radiative transfer modelling, mathematics of inversion, and electromagnetic scattering.
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) plays a key role in both stratospheric and tropospheric chemistry. This PhD-project will address the development and refinement of novel scientific algorithms for the retrieval of total and tropospheric NO2 from the European Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) satellite instrument. S5P was launched in October 2017 and belongs to a new generation of satellite instruments providing trace gases measurements with better spatial and temporal resolution that allow a detailed view of the NO2 pollution patterns on a global scale. The newly developed NO2 retrieval algorithm will include improvements in the DOAS (Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy) method and in the radiative transfer modelling. The NO2 observations from S5P will be compared with ground-based MAX-DOAS measurements at various sites in Europe and China. Local information on the vertical NO2 profile and aerosol properties at these sites will be used to improve the satellite retrieval algorithms over polluted regions.
This PhD-project will also address the estimation of ground level NO2 concentrations using a satellite-based regression method. Tropospheric NO2 columns from S5P will be used together with ambient monitoring station measurements and meteorological data to determine ground level NO2 over Germany and surrounding countries. The regression analysis will be carried out using a Neural Network.

Master in physics, meteorology, mathematics, or in a similar field
