Job description

Several research positions are available to early-stage and experienced researchers in the Marie Sklodowska Curie Initial Training Network MAGISTER, funded by the European Commission under Horizon 2020. MAGISTER is a multi-disciplinary project providing research training in computational fluid mechanics, combustion dynamics, acoustics and machine learning. The research objective is to predict accurately the combustion dynamics in a gas turbine engine over the full range of Technology Readiness Levels, by means of the application of machine learning on CFD simulations, laboratory experiments and full engine data.

Within the Fluid Mechanics group a vacancy exists for a PhD position.
The objectives of this study are:
(I) Extend the high order Discontinuous Galerkin method, (SU2 code), such that it is able to simulate the flows through combustor liner and dilution holes. Specific items to look at are time accurate local time stepping and the addition of some LES subgrid scale models. (II) Apply this method to LES of compressible turbulent flows, for the acoustic prediction of the flow through a liner dilution hole. (III) Compare the acoustic performance of the different LES subgrid scale models for the above mentioned flows.
The expected results are:
(I) High fidelity simulations of compressible LES to predict the acoustics. It is expected that the high order Discontinuous Galerkin discretization is able to provide these predictions with increased efficiency compared to current state of the art discretizations due to its superior quality of the numerical solutions.

Requirements

Candidate must be able to demonstrate competence in Computational Fluid Mechanics under the supervision of Dr. Jim Kok and Dr. Edwin van der Weide.

Candidates with a non-Dutch qualification and who have not had secondary and tertiary education in English can only be admitted with an IELTS-test showing a total band score of at least 6.5, internet TOEFL test (TOEFL-iBT) showing a score of at least 90, or a Cambridge CAE-C (CPE).

Applicants must satisfy the eligibility rules stipulated by the Horizon 2020 Guidelines of the European Commission. In particular, they must not have performed their main activity in the Netherlands for more than 12 months of the 36 months preceding the position. Early-Stage Researchers must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers, starting at the date of obtaining the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate

Information

For more information about this vacancy you can contact Dr.ir. Edwin van der Weide, telephone +31 53 4892593 (e-mail: e.t.a.vanderweide@utwente.nl)

Application

Your application, provided with a CV, list of three persons for reference, a list of publications (if applicable), and a summary of the M.Sc thesis should be sent before 1 September, 2017 through the link below

Conditions of employment

The successful applicant will be appointed on a 3 year contract.

The salary for PhD research starts at € 2.222,- gross per month for the first year and extends to a maximum of € 2.709,- gross per month in the third year (in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). In addition, the University of Twente offers attractive fringe benefits.
