Full Professor of Systems
Engineering for Electrical
Energy Storage

at pay grade W 3 (minimum salary per month: 7,217 euros) to commence as soon as possible. This is a permanent civil service position.

The successful applicant will be expected to play an active and leading role in the newly founded
Bavarian Centre for Battery Technology (BayBatt)

BayBatt is a central scientific institute of the University of Bayreuth and combines its battery-specific expertise in physics and chemistry, materials science, engineering, computer science, and economics. The research focuses on safe high-performance materials, interface phenomena and transport processes, smart batteries and interconnected storage systems, and covers all size scales of battery research from the atomistic structure to particles, cell components and cells, battery modules and battery systems, right through to the higher-level energy system.

We are looking for a scholar who has an excellent international track record in the research and development of electrical energy storage systems, especially in functional and safe architecture along with the design of complex technical systems. The candidate is expected to complement the existing expertise in the Faculty of Engineering Science and to continue inter-faculty collaboration, including with non-university institutions, as well as to develop new concepts. The willingness and ability to acquire third-party funding, including in coordinated programmes, must be evident.

The research focus of the professor should be in at least two of the following areas and have relevance for the development of electrical energy storage systems:
  • Functional system architecture (system design) of heterogeneous systems (electro-chemical, electrical, mechanical, thermal, and intelligent).
  • Reliability of electrical energy storage systems
  • Functional safety and availability of electrical energy storage systems
  • Requirements and specification management methods: definition, analysis, and monitoring of system requirements and processes
The postholder will be expected to play a central role in the interdisciplinary master's programme Battery Technology & Battery Systems Engineering that is now under development, and in particular to contribute systems engineering aspects, mathematical and conceptual principles, and holistic methods for planning, monitoring, and implementing projects. In addition to this research-related teaching, undergraduate teaching will also have to be provided, including in the Engineering Science, and Electrical Engineering & Information System Technology programmes. The ability to teach in German and in English is expected.

The general administrative requirements for hiring professors at universities in Bavaria apply. A complete description of the vacancy can be found at www.uni-bayreuth.de/en.

Applications (CV, outlining education and academic career, list of publications, list of courses taught, experience obtaining external funding, as well as copies of all diplomas and certificates) are to be submitted electronically to the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Döpper, via https://uni-bayreuth.berufungsportal.de by 25.04.2021. Applicants are welcome to direct questions and requests for further information to the Dean at dekanat.ing@uni-bayreuth.de. Application documents will be deleted in accordance with data protection law following the conclusion of the appointment process.
