The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, in conjunction with the "Africa Multiple" Cluster of Excellence, is currently seeking to appoint a
Full Professor of Culture and Technology in Africa
at pay grade W3 (minimum salary per month: 6,683 € ) to commence on 1 October 2019. This is a permanent civil service position. Additional salary components will be negotiated separately.
This professorship investigates the interactions of culture, society, and technology from a cultural and social science perspective. It builds a bridge between
the cultural and social sciences and the health, environmental, and engineering sciences.
Empirical research in Africa on the production, circulation, and adaptation of technologies and on the social consequences of the transfer of technologies in the
context of global networking is expected. Ideally, the applicant will deal with issues of global justice, vulnerability, risk, health, and/or ecology as well as the
associated production of knowledge.
Active participation in the African focus of the University of Bayreuth is expected, as is participation in inter- and transdisciplinary collaborative research, in
particular the active development of the research agenda for the "Africa Multiple" Cluster of Excellence. In addition, the professorship is to contribute to networking
between the African focus of the University of Bayreuth and the engineering sciences as well as to strengthening cultural and social science expertise within the newly
founded Faculty of Food, Nutrition & Health on the Kulmbach Campus.
Teaching duties will be in the bachelor's and master's programmes in the field of African Studies (African Culture and Society, African Development Studies in Geography,
Social Anthropology, and Social and Cultural Anthropology), in engineering degree programmes, and in the Graduate School BIGSAS. The willingness to raise third-party funding
and to contribute to academic self-administration are assumed.
Requirements for this position (in accordance with Article 7 and Article 10 para 3 BayHSchPG) are a university degree, a doctoral degree, a post-doctoral
qualification to teach at a professorial level (Habilitation), and proven excellence in teaching. Evidence of equivalent scholarly achievement as a junior
professor or in a non-university environment will also be considered. A further prerequisite is the ability to teach in English. International applicants must be able
to teach in German after no more than three years. Only applicants who are 51 years of age or younger can be hired as civil servants (Article 10 para 3 BayHSchPG).
