About

The Institute for Computer Science, Faculty 4: Computer Science at the Koblenz Campus offers 

an Endowed University Professorship of the Carl Zeiss Foundation (W2 per LBesG) for Computer Science and Didactics (m/f/d)

with civil service status, to be filled at the earliest possible date.

The Faculty “Computer Science” focuses in particular on data intelligence. This topic complex is researched, taught, and developed from different perspectives of computer science and its application fields in cooperation with regional, national and international stakeholders.

The Institute for Computer Science at the Faculty 4: Computer Science covers teaching and research in the classical areas of computer science: theoretical computer science, practical computer science, and computer engineering. 

The endowed professorship of the Carl Zeiss Foundation will strengthen teacher education in the field of computer science by researching didactics of computer science and by establishing future-oriented computer science education in the schools of the region. The endowed professorship of the Carl Zeiss Foundation develops didactics in computer science further and researches new and sustainable concepts, methods and materials for computer science education. Along this, empirical research and development of innovative concepts shall mutually be geared to each other in order to develop computer science education further in an iterative process. Therewith, the endowed professorship of the Carl Zeiss Foundation shall contribute to effective transmission and success conditions of computer science concepts as well as to personal and societal preconditions for successful computer science education. To achieve this, the endowed professorship of the Carl Zeiss Foundation will advance teaching and learning concepts for the computer science teacher program, including for different age groups and for distinct types of schools. This also includes establishing and maintaining a teaching-learning lab. Therewith, the research results will be diffused to practice at university and at school level. Along the application for the endowed professorship of the Carl Zeiss Foundation, four schools in the region already confirmed their interest in a close collaboration. It is the duty of the professorship to care this cooperation.

The State of Rhineland-Palatinate and the University of Koblenz-Landau advocate a concept of intensive student mentoring and therefore expect a high face-to-face presence at the university.

Your tasks

The position holder will be responsible for representing the subject ‘Computer Science and Didactics' in research and teaching.

He/She shall have an outstanding track record in researching Computer Science and Didactics. 

Research is expected to focus on didactics of computer science and on developing innovative teacher-learner concepts for different types of schools, including empirical research and/or research on developing new concepts, methods and materials for computer science education that is fit for the future. Research on effective transmission and success conditions of computer science concepts as well as on personal and societal preconditions for successful computer science education in schools will be a plus.

In addition, active engagement in the acquisition of third-party funding will be expected.

The position holder’s responsibilities will include actively recruiting and developing young scientists. 

The teaching load is currently nine hours per week per semester. 

Teaching is to be provided primarily in the didactics courses of the teacher training degree programs offered and to a lesser extent in subject specific courses that are especially relevant to teacher training.

Assisting with examinations in all degree programs of the Faculty 4: Computer Science is also expected.

The willingness to cooperate across and within disciplines and in general is a prerequisite, particularly in the context of the Center of Teacher Education.

It is also expected that the position holder will take on responsibilities in academic self-government.

The position holder will be expected to play a significant role in shaping the Faculty through her/his own ideas and emphases and actively generate initiatives that contribute to developing teacher training.

Your profile

The recruitment requirements of Section 49 of the Higher Education Act (HochSchG) of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate apply. The statute requires a completed higher education, a qualified doctorate in computer science, didactics of computer science or related areas, pedagogical aptitude and additional scientific achievements.

Only candidates with at least three years teaching experience at school are to be appointed to a position whose job description includes tasks in educational science or subject specific teaching methodology.

Experience in acquiring and managing externally funded projects is expected to be documented with an overview of past third-party funding activities. A research concept must also be presented.

Both good German and good English language skills are required, as courses are offered in both languages.

Special didactic skills and teaching experience are required and must be demonstrated by presenting a teaching concept.
