The Senckenberg Society for Nature Research (Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung) is a non-profit civil society, founded by Frankfurt citizens in 1817. Today it has about 6,500 members and is the largest institution of the Leibniz Association. Its collections make it one of the most significant natural research institutes worldwide. At eleven locations across Germany, roughly 800 employees from over 40 nations are engaged in state-of-the-art and interdisciplinary biodiversity and earth system research at the top international level. The Senckenberg Society maintains successful natural history museums in Frankfurt, Görlitz and Dresden which attract around 500,000 visitors each year. With 40 million items, Senckenberg has the fifth-largest natural history collection worldwide.
The Senckenberg Society for Nature Research, headquartered in Frankfurt am Main, is looking for a
in combination with a professorship (W3) at Goethe-University Frankfurt
to start 01 January 2021.
The Director General heads a multi-member directorate, which governs the business activities of the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research. He/she bears the overall responsibility for the strategic direction and operative management of Senckenberg.
The society is looking for an internationally renowned personality, who will work with the members of the directorate, the supervisory committees and the scientific council, as well as all employees to foster the dynamic development of Senckenberg with its systemic approach to nature research. Suitable candidates should be characterized by excellent scientific performance and experience in managing complex research institutions or programs.
The position requires a high capacity for innovation and pronounced creative drive, as well as strong communication and integration skills in order to satisfy the varied demands of dealing with the Senckenberg civil society and representatives of the scientific, political, economic and social sphere. Outstanding science management skills are essential.
Suitable applicants should have a high affinity for developing and researching the collections, particularly with digital approaches. Openness for new technologies and innovation as well as the ability to implement new approaches are assumed.
Passion for interacting with the society and for the transfer of scientific insights under particular consideration of aspects of museum design is expected.
Prerequisites for the position are completed university studies with a doctorate and habilitation-equivalent achievements, preferably in the biological or geological sciences or related disciplines, as well as proof of excellent research and publication achievements, and several years of responsible management experience and university teaching assignments. Experience with natural history collections and exhibitions is advantageous. Proficiency in the German language (GER Level C2) is expected.
Senckenberg and Goethe University are close strategic partners and connected through numerous joint projects. The appointment to the position of Director General of Senckenberg is concurrent with a W3 professorship at Goethe University with a reduced teaching load (2 SWS); the hiring process is conducted jointly by Senckenberg and Goethe University.
