Director (f/m) of the DLR Institute of Data Science / Professorship (W3) of Data Analytics
Friedrich Schiller University / German Aerospace Center
The German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Friedrich Schiller University (FSU)
Jena invite applications for the position of
Director of the DLR Institute of Data Science in Jena. The successful candidate will also be appointed as
Professor (W3) of Data Analytics in the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at FSU Jena
These combined positions are available from April 1st, 2019. Applications will
be assessed by a joint DLR/FSU appointment committee.
The DLR Institute of Data Science is a new institute which was founded in
2017. Its research priority area is the analysis and processing of large and
heterogeneous data, with a particular focus on methodological and analytic
foundations. The institute is part of the DLR’s space research program. It will
conduct both basic and applied research, and deliver solutions for the handling
of data in all of DLR’s research areas. Applications of the methods and
processes it develops will be implemented in close cooperation with other DLR
institutes. Initially, the institute’s own resources will provide for approximately
65 members of staff. In the longer term, third-party funding should constitute
up to 40 % of the institute’s income. Further information can be found at
FSU Jena provides many cooperation opportunities in the field of data science,
especially with the local Max Planck Institutes and other research institutes in
Jena. This new professorial position is assigned to the Faculty of Mathematics
and Computer Science. We expect close collaboration, both with the faculty’s
other research groups and within the interdisciplinary Michael Stifel Center for
Data-Driven and Simulation Science (MSCJ), which coordinates cooperation
between the various faculties of the FSU. Further information about the faculty
can be found at www.fmi.uni-jena.de.
As head of the DLR Institute, the Director must have achieved international
recognition for work covering a broad spectrum of areas within data analytics,
with the analysis and management of large-scale scientific data as a priority
area, and a particular emphasis on machine learning: only then will they be able
to draw together the various specializations within the DLR Institute under the
overarching theme of data science. Consequently, we are particularly interested
in topics such as unsupervised learning, representation learning, anomaly
detection, causality, and the combination of real world models with machine
learning methods. The successful candidate will be willing to transfer results
from blue skies research to applied areas of data science and should already
have experience of doing this. Desirable working areas include e.g. Industry
4.0 and IT security, but also earth observation, intelligent traffic management,
intelligent energy networks, citizen science, and more generally the whole area
of data analytics. Experience in the acquisition and management of large-scale
third-party funded programs is expected, as is the willingness to cooperate
interdisciplinarily with partners from industry and the research community. The
capability to run a research institute is essential.
The provisions of Thuringia’s state university law for the appointment of
professors apply to this position. The university position comes with a reduced
teaching load of two hours per week per semester.
The Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the German Aerospace Center seek
to raise the percentage of female professors on their staff. Therefore, they
particularly encourage female scientists to apply. Handicapped applicants with
equally good qualifications will be given preference.
Applications including CV, photocopies of degree certificates, list of teaching
courses with evaluation results, list of publications, record of third-party
funding and a research plan should be submitted, preferably by e-mail, to the
Dean, Faculty for Mathematics and Computer Science, Friedrich Schiller
University Jena, Ernst-Abbe-Platz 2, 07743 Jena, Germany, e-mail:email@example.com. The closing date for applications is
August 30th, 2018. Further inquiries related to the DLR Institute of Data Science
can be addressed to: firstname.lastname@example.org
