The
Technical University of Munich (TUM) invites applications for the position of
Tenure Track Assistant Professor
in »Computational Pathology«
to begin at the earliest possible date. The position is a W2 fixed-term position (6 years) with tenure track option to a tenured W3 position (Associate Professor). The professorship is funded by the Federal Government Tenure Track program.
Scientific environment
The professorship belongs to the TUM School of Medicine and will be part of the Department of General Pathology and Pathological Anatomy, a large diagnostic and research institution for morphomolecular human and comparative pathology. TUM School of Medicine is one of Germany’s top medical schools in research and in teaching. Close interactions with the mathematics, bioinformatics, systems medicine and data science groups at TUM enable inno-vative, interdisciplinary and translational research. To foster interdisciplinary research focusing on morphomolecular biomarker discoveries, TUM has also advertised a professorship in Translational Pathology, belonging to the same department.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities of the position include research and teaching, as well as the promotion of early-career scientists. We seek to appoint an expert in the research area bioinformatics/mathematics, focusing on computer-based (microscopy) image analysis. The integration of multi-omics data with morphology by using machine/deep learning methods will enable the morphomolecular identification of disease-specific and tissue-specific biomarkers. The professorship will bridge the evolution of computer learning methods and the translation of multi data approaches into clinical routine diagnostics.
The teaching load includes courses in the subject area and basic courses offered by the TUM School of Medicine, as well as courses for other TUM schools and departments.
Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate who has already demonstrated considerable scientific achievement and the capacity for independent research at the highest international standards. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree or equivalent scientific qualification, as well as pedagogical aptitude, including the ability to teach in English, are also prerequisites. Substantial research experience abroad, proven ability in leadership of research projects as well as proven ability to acquire competitive third-party funding (e.g. DFG, EU) are expected. A successful application for an advanced personal research fellowship (e.g. Heisenberg, ERC) is desirable.
The professorship will work at the interface of clinical pathology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics/mathematics research. Therefore, relevant knowledge in bioinformatics/mathematics processing of life science omics datasets and/or a profound knowledge of learning algorithms in computer vision/image analysis is required.
Our Offer
Based on best international standards and transparent performance criteria, TUM offers a merit-based academic career option for tenure track faculty from Assistant Professor through a permanent position as Associate Professor, and on to Full Professor.
