Doctoral Position (PhD)
with 3/4-part-time job, limited to 3 years, Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L FU reference code: GRACE-FO
The satellite gravimetry mission GRACE-FO has been successfully launched in May 2018 in a joint effort between NASA and Germany to continue the 15-years long record of global monthly gravity fields acquired with the GRACE mission between 2002 and 2017. We are looking for a motivated Ph.D. student to contribute to the development of a new global ocean tide model required for the processing of accurate monthly mean gravity fields. The position will be part of the newly established research group „New Refined Observations of Climate Change from Spaceborne Gravity Mission“ (NEROGRAV) founded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Starting date is April 1st 2019.
Design, run, and the analyses of new experiments with the global ocean tide model TiME
Reassessment of the impact of ocean bathymetry uncertainties on simulated tidal dynamics
Evaluation of model experiments with independent geodetic and oceanographic data
Quantification of uncertainties of simulated tidal elevations
The successful candidate is expected to hold a M.Sc. in physics, mathematics, geodesy, oceanography or related field by the start of the appointment.
Profound mathematical skills including experience with time series analysis, parameter estimation, inverse problems and/or uncertainty quantification
First experience with numerical modelling of large-scale geophysical fluid dynamics would be an advantage
