W3 Professorship in General Paediatrics
as of the earliest possible date. Reference is made to § 67 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to the conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.
The professorship is linked to the head of the Clinic for General Paediatrics and Neonatology.
Duties:
You represent the field of general paediatrics in research, teaching, and patient care across the entire spectrum. All tasks related to the professorship in patient care are regulated through a contract by the UKGM.
The Clinic for General Paediatrics and Neonatology focuses in particular on the fields of neonatology, gastroenterology, endocrinology (including diabetology) and rheumatology. With your high level of internationally recognized scientific and clinical expertise, you will complement these key areas and actively enhance existing structures through collaboration and interdisciplinary teamwork.
In addition, the Center for Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine comprises independent clinics and professorships in paediatric cardiology, intensive care medicine and congenital heart defects, paediatric neurology, muscular disorders and social paediatrics, as well as paediatric oncology, haematology, and immunodeficiency disorders. Your core tasks also include the competent and integrative leadership of the clinic within the mentioned areas of focus.
Your scientific focus lies in care and treatment of newborns/premature infants and/or another focus area of the clinic and the associated disease entities. Integration into existing collaborative research projects – particularly the Cluster of Excellence – Cardiopulmonary Institute (CPI), the German Center for Lung Research (DZL), and the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) – is expected. Furthermore, your participation in existing research consortia (e.g., in the Institute for Lung Health (ILH) and in the Collaborative Research Center CRC 1213 “Pulmonary Hypertension and Cor Pulmonale-) is expected. You are expected to take the initiative in securing new research projects and collaborative initiatives and participate in existing networks. In this context, a willingness to actively cooperate within the university-s focus area Cardiopulmonary System (Heart/Lungs) as well as the accent areas of the Faculty of Medicine “translational oncology- and “repair and regeneration- is expected, as is participation in the Giessen Graduate Center for the Life Sciences (GGL), the structured doctoral program (JLU TRAINEE), and the clinician scientist program (JLU CAREER).
Your teaching duties will particularly include participation in paediatric lectures, seminars on the interdisciplinary subject of paediatrics and adolescent medicine (F12 GiCuPaed) and involvement in the core curriculum for paediatrics.
The integration of gender aspects into research, teaching and patient care is explicitly desired.
The universities of Giessen and Marburg have established the Research Campus of Central Hessen together with Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen – University of Applied Sciences. Within this framework, the two Faculties of Medicine engage in structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. Accordingly, you are expected to demonstrate a willingness for interdisciplinary and inter-university collaboration within campus research foci and profile areas as well as participation in joint research projects. In particular, cross university/hospital patient-oriented clinical research and participation in joint clinical studies is expected.
Requirements:
Prerequisites for the position include a successfully completed university education in medicine, the necessary qualification for scientific work according to § 67 Para. 1 HessHG, usually proven by an outstanding doctorate, and additional pertinent academic achievements (proven e.g. by a habilitation or internationally recognized subject-specific publications in renowned national and international journals).
You also have internationally recognized expertise in the field of paediatrics. Proof of a board certification (specialist qualification) in paediatrics and adolescent medicine is required. Additional subspecialist certifications in the focus areas of the Clinic for General Paediatrics and Neonatology are desirable. Management experience is an advantage.
In addition, experience in coordinating scientific projects in interdisciplinary networks and success in independent acquisition (and management) of externally funded projects (preferably DFG, BMFTR, EU) are required.
In addition, proof of a special pedagogical aptitude is required as a qualification to represent the specialist field of general paediatrics in academic teaching with great commitment and in its whole scope.
In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 HessHG in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
