The professorship is linked to the head of the Medical Physics Department within the Clinic for Radiation Oncology.
Duties:
You will represent the field of medical physics across the entire spectrum of research, teaching, and patient care within the Clinic for Radiation Oncology. All tasks related to the professorship in patient care are regulated through a contract by the UKGM.
You will conduct research in the field of high-precision radiation therapy. The primary objective of your research is the application-oriented investigation and improvement of modern radiation therapy techniques. As part of this, you will further develop and optimize innovative technologies, such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), and stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT). In this context, you will participate in existing collaborations, particularly with the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen (THM), the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research GmbH in Darmstadt (GSI), the Marburg Ion Beam Therapy Center (MIT), and the UKGM-s radiology disciplines (diagnostic radiology, neuroradiology, nuclear medicine).
The core focus of your international research profile is the optimization of photon and/or particle radiation. You will be expected to independently establish new research projects, collaborations, and scientific networks. Your commitment to collaborate within the university-s focus area “Cardiopulmonary System (Heart/Lungs)- as well as within the Faculty of Medicine-s accent areas “Translational Oncology- and “Experimental and Applied Neuroscience- is expected. Furthermore, active participation in existing collaborative research programs, in particular the Cluster of Excellence – Cardio-Pulmonary Institute (CPI), the German Center for Lung Research (DZL), the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF), and relevant LOEWE focus areas, is also expected.
Your teaching load amounts to 8 semester hours per week. It involves conducting courses, including lectures, seminars, and practical courses for students of medicine and dentistry. Furthermore, you will actively contribute to teaching in the field of medical physics at THM with a particular focus on the joint supervision of theses with colleagues at the THM.
You are also expected to participate in the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL), the structured doctoral program for promoting early-career researchers (JLU TRAINEE), and the clinician scientist program (JLU CAREER).
The integration of gender aspects in research, teaching, and patient care is explicitly desired.
The universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (Research Campus of Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects. In particular, cross university/hospital patient-oriented clinical research and the participation in joint clinical studies is expected.
Requirements:
The prerequisites for this position include a successfully completed university degree, preferably in the field of medicine or the natural sciences, as well as the necessary qualification for scientific work according to § 67 Para. 1 HessHG, usually proven by an outstanding doctorate. In addition, relevant additional academic achievements (proven e.g. by a habilitation or in the form of internationally recognized, subject-specific publications in renowned national and international journals) are required. Proof of qualification as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) is required.
You also possess internationally recognized expertise in your research area, including strong links to medical physics research. In addition, you should have experience in international collaboration and be internationally distinguished in your field of research.
Furthermore, you should demonstrate success in the independent acquisition of external funding.
Additionally, proof of a special pedagogical aptitude is required as a qualification to represent the specialist field in academic teaching with great commitment and in its full scope.
The JLU welcomes qualified applications regardless of biological and social gender (m/f/d), disability, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, age as well as sexual orientation and identity.
