The Faculty of Medicine of Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) and the University Hospital Giessen and Marburg GmbH (UKGM), Giessen Campus, invite applications for a

W2 Professorship (with W3 tenure track) in Pathomechanisms of hospital-acquired infections and antimicrobial stewardship

provisionally limited to a period of six years as of the earliest possible date. Reference is made to § 70 Para. 1 and 4 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to the conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. In case of eligibility, which will be evaluated according to § 70 Para. 2 HessHG, a permanent W3 professorship will be offered subsequently. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.

Duties:
The professorship is located at the Medical Clinic V – Clinic for Internal Medicine with a focus on Infectious Diseases and Hospital Hygiene. The professorship is linked with the management of the antimicrobial (antibiotic) stewardship program. Applicants are expected to possess comprehensive clinical and research expertise in the fields of infectious diseases, infection prevention, and the microbiology of nosocomial pathogens.

Your responsibilities will include comprehensively representing the field in research, teaching, and patient care in the areas of nosocomial infections and antimicrobial stewardship. Tasks related to the professorship in patient care will be regulated by the UKGM.

Your scientific focus should be on clinically relevant basic research into nosocomial infections and inflammation. Proven expertise in this area is therefore expected, as is expertise in the field of translational research. This will involve the use of innovative ex vivo organ and animal models, as well as biological samples from relevant human cohorts. The conduct of mono- and multi-centre clinical trials is desirable.

You are expected to actively participate in existing research networks, such as the Cluster of Excellence – “Cardiopulmonary Institute- (CPI) or the DFG Research Unit FOR 5427 “Bacterial Renal Infection and Defense- (BARICADE). Furthermore, you will be expected to independently acquire further external funding and collaborate in national and international networks. Active participation in the JLU-s focus areas, the campus research foci of the Research Campus of Central Hessen (FCMH) “Lung and Heart-, “Microorganisms and Viruses-, and “Hospital Hygiene- – as well as the profile area -Infections and Inflammations-, is expected.

You will also be involved in the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) and the German Center for Lung Research (DZL).

Furthermore, you are expected to participate in established structures for the promotion of early-career scientific and clinical researchers, such as the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL), the structured doctoral program (JLU TRAINEE), and the clinician scientist program (JLU CAREER).

Your teaching duties are to be fulfilled in accordance with the applicable Teaching Obligation Regulation within the curricular teaching of the Faculty of Medicine, for instance in interdisciplinary cross-sectional lectures and practical courses.

The integration of gender aspects in research and teaching is explicitly desired.

The universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (Research Campus of Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects. In particular, cross university/hospital patient-oriented clinical research and the participation in joint clinical studies is expected.

Requirements:
The prerequisites for this position include a successfully completed university education in medicine, the necessary qualification for scientific work according to § 67 Para. 1 HessHG, usually proven by an outstanding doctorate, and excellent additional academic achievements (proven e.g. by a habilitation or internationally recognized, subject-specific publications with peer review).

Proof of board certification (specialist qualification) in hygiene and environmental medicine, in microbiology, virology and infectious disease epidemiology, or in internal medicine and infectious diseases is also required. You are internationally recognized in your field of research and you should possess extensive expertise in basic research on infectious diseases.

Success in the independent acquisition of external funding should be proven.

Additionally, proof of a special pedagogical aptitude is also required as a qualification to represent the specialist field in academic teaching in its whole scope.

You demonstrate broad clinical expertise in the field of infectious diseases and/or infection prevention. Relevant experience in the field of antimicrobial stewardship is also a prerequisite.

In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
