The University of Göttingen enjoys high international acclaim, owing to its long research tradition and broad spectrum of subjects in the natural sciences, life sciences, humanities and social sciences. With more than 210 degree courses, we offer an attractive range of subjects for around 30,000 students. Göttingen is characterized by the close cooperation of the University, the University Medical Center and seven non-university research institutions that forms the Göttingen Campus. Its innovative, interdisciplinary potential creates excellent conditions for cutting-edge research at the highest international level.

The Faculty of Biology and Psychology at the University of Göttingen invites applications for a temporary professorship with civil servant status (grade W1 NBesO) with tenure track (grade W2 NBesO) at the Institute of Microbiology and Genetics at the earliest possible date:

W1 Professorship with tenure track to W2 in Microbial Genetics (f/m/d)

The successful candidate will initially be appointed for a period of three years. If the interim evaluation is positive, the employment contract will be extended for another three years. Transfer to a permanent professorship (W2) shall take place after another positive evaluation without the position being readvertised.

The professorship will be integrated into the field of microbiology/genetics regarding research and teaching as well as basic research and allocated to the faculty focus area of molecular biosciences. In terms of research, the professorship will focus on innovative functional research in the field of molecular biology and biochemistry, for example through analyses of complex molecular networks of eukaryotic or prokaryotic microorganisms. For this purpose, the use of state-of-the-art methods for data collection and/or analysis is desirable. We expect collaboration with the existing research networks and planned research initiatives of the faculty in particular in the focus area of molecular biosciences with the connection to the Göttingen Center for Molecular Biosciences (GZMB). We further expect the willingness to conduct interdisciplinary research. Beyond that, the post holder will be expected to set a sustainable research focus by presenting a future-oriented concept that will constitute the foundation for multidisciplinary collaborative research.

The post holder will be expected to participate in the undergraduate teaching in Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes of the Faculty of Biology and Psychology, in particular in the Bachelor’s degree programmes in Biology and Biochemistry, as well as in the Master’s degree programmes in Molecular Life Sciences und Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. The University of Göttingen is committed to research-oriented teaching.

Appointment requirements are stipulated by Article 30 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act in the most current version of that law. As a rule, applicants who have obtained their doctorate from the University of Göttingen can only be considered for a junior professorship if after the completion of the doctoral thesis they have transferred to another university or worked for a minimum of two years in research elsewhere. The University of Göttingen is a Public Law Foundation and thereby entitled to award professorships. Details will be provided upon request.

Applications from abroad are explicitly welcome. The University of Göttingen strives to increase the proportion of women in areas where women are underrepresented and therefore explicitly invites qualified female scholars to apply. The University has committed itself to being a family-friendly institution and supports its employees in balancing work and family life. The University is particularly committed to the professional participation of disabled employees and therefore welcomes applications from persons with disabilities. In the case of equivalent qualifications, applications from disabled persons will be given preference. In order for the University to be able to protect the interests of the applicant, information about a disability or equal status should be included in the application.

Please send your application as one PDF file including cover letter, CV, publication list, teaching statement, and research statement to the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Biology and Psychology (dekanbio@gwdg.de) by September 30, 2025.

If you have further questions, please contact Prof. Dr. Jan de Vries (devries.jan@uni-goettingen.de).
