The Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics is seeking to fill the following position as soon as possible:

W1 – Junior Professorship (f/m/d) for Neuromorphic Computing

The employment is initially for three years in the civil service relationship, whereby the employment relationship is to be extended for a further three years after a positive evaluation.

We are looking for an outstanding personality who represents the field of neuromorphic computing in research and teaching at the Department of Computer Science and will be appropriately involved in the education of students in the study programs Computer Science and Computer Engineering. The sought personality should have an outstanding scientific track record in the field of circuit and system architecture aspects of neuromorphic computing and have published at competitive international venues and journals, for example in one or more of the following areas:
  • Circuit design and components integration for neuromorphic computing
  • New hardware architecture (e.g., computing in memory, adaptive hardware, spiking neural networks) for brain-inspired computing
  • Systems software and hardware-software integration for neuromorphic computing
The Department of Computer Science is pursuing five strategic research areas: Security, Data Science, Software Engineering, Quantum Computing, and Domain-Specific Computing. Connectivity to at least the strategic area of Domain-Specific Computing is required.

We expect the position holder to be willing and interested in working on applications for large-scale projects – especially interdisciplinary ones – to actively help shape new projects and to integrate into existing research institutions. Paderborn University offers excellent opportunities for this with research facilities such as the SICP – Software Innovation Campus, the Joint Artificial Intelligence Institute (JAII), or the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing (PC²). There is also the possibility of collaborations with the Heinz Nixdorf Institute (HNI) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechatronic System Design (IEM). Initial experience in the acquisition of competitive third-party funding is desirable. Furthermore, the ability and willingness to teach in English and to participate in academic self-administration is required. For applicants who do not yet speak German, a willingness to learn the language is expected.

With 11 interdisciplinary research institutions and participation in 5 collaborative research centers (4 in spokesperson function), 2 DFG research groups, 8 graduate colleges and 2 DFG priority programs, Paderborn University is the ideal environment for implementing bold research ideas. As the location of a national high-performance computing center, the university offers outstanding computing resources to implement these ideas.

Recruitment requirements: § 36 Abs. 1 Ziff. 1 to 3 HG NRW (University law of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia) (completed university degree, pedagogical aptitude and Ph.D. degree).

Since Paderborn University seeks to increase the number of female professors, applications of woman are especially welcome.
