With about 17,000 students, more than 300 professorships and around 160 degree programs, the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU) is the technical university of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. As a place of top international research, it offers excellent working conditions and career opportunities. Those who study, research or work at RPTU experience a cosmopolitan environment and shape the future.
This is a position with a binding tenure track commitment in accordance with Section 55 of the Rhineland-Palatinate Higher Education Act.
The position will initially be filled as a W 1 position as a temporary civil servant for six years. In addition to an interim evaluation for orientation purposes, a tenure evaluation will be carried out at the end of the term on the basis of clearly defined and transparent criteria. These criteria are defined together with the future position holder at the time of appointment. After successful completion of the tenure evaluation, the appointment is made as a civil servant for life in grade W 2/3, provided that the general requirements under civil service law are met. The procedure is regulated in the statutes on quality assurance for appointments at RPTU.
To strengthen our research on global environmental challenges at the Institute for Environmental Sciences (iES) in the Department of Natural and Environmental Sciences, we are looking for a qualified individual with recognized expertise in environmental modeling/environmental data sciences. We therefore welcome applications that complement our existing portfolio in an integrative manner.
Your tasks include:
The successful candidate should represent the field of in research and teaching.
The new colleague's potential research focus should be on the theory and analysis of the structure and dynamics of environmental systems from an ecological perspective (e.g., dynamic modeling of populations, communities, networks, carbon and nutrient cycling, cross-scale modeling). The position holder is expected to integrate and work with data from other research groups. We therefore expect close involvement in analyses of anthropogenic stressors (especially material pollution) in meta-ecosystems that are already established on site and in corresponding existing research programs (e.g., DFG Research Training Group SystemLink; https://systemlink.rptu.de). Due to planned coordinated programs, we also welcome experience with multiple stressors, mixture toxicity, or environmental data science. In addition, an understanding of empirical research (field data collection, experimental design) is desirable for the best possible integration. The RPTU offers opportunities to develop the research of the position holder into adjacent areas such as computer science, artificial intelligence, or machine learning. Existing or planned involvement in at least one of these areas until the final evaluation is desirable, given the broader integration across the entire RPTU. We ask that you outline your efforts in this regard in your written application.
The institute contributes to the bachelor’s program in Environmental Sciences and three English-language master’s programs: Environmental Sciences, Environmental Pollution Management – Ecotoxicology, and Environmental Challenges and Human Responses. In teaching, the professorship covers environmental modeling (e.g., ecological modeling, modeling in ecotoxicology) as well as related areas (e.g., statistics and/or GIS). It contributes to quality assurance and the further development of degree programs. Active participation in university self-governance is expected.
Your profile:
Applicants must hold a successfully completed degree from a university or comparable institution in biology, ecology, geoecology, environmental sciences, or related fields, must demonstrate pedagogical suitability, provide evidence of teaching experience, and a qualified doctorate either with clear references to environmental modeling or with publications that unequivocally demonstrate the development of this expertise. Proof of successfully acquired third-party funding is also desirable. Interdisciplinary and international cooperation in environmental sciences is desirable. Depending on the degree program, teaching must be conducted in either German or English. Knowledge of both languages is generally required. If the applicant does not have sufficient knowledge of German, they are expected to be willing to acquire the necessary language skills within a reasonable period of time.
The state of Rhineland-Palatinate and RPTU advocate a supervision concept in which a high level of presence of teaching staff at the university location is expected. In addition to the general employment requirements, the employment requirements set out in Section 54 of the Rhineland-Palatinate Higher Education Act apply.
RPTU stands for the diversity of all employees.
