The Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) – Member of the Leibniz Association is offering the position o

Postdoctoral Researcher in Financial Economics (f/m/x, 100%)

JEL Classification: G

assigned to the Department of Financial Markets, starting in the fall term 2026 or earlier. The contract is limited to three years with an option to extend it by another three years. The place of employment is Halle (Saale). Your remuneration entitlement corresponds to pay group 13 of the German public sector salary scheme TV-L.

At the IWH

Core research areas in the Financial Markets department are financial intermediation, corporate finance, as well as financial regulation and stability. We are an international group comprising mostly empirically working economists who are dedicated to excellence in research. We aim to contribute to financial economic research by means of participation at leading conferences and publishing our work in leading finance and economic journals. We closely collaborate with fellow academics, policy makers, and central bankers from across the globe. Active research collaborations exist both within the department as well as across the three other IWH departments. Via its Research Data Center, the IWH hosts a wealth of commercial databases via WRDS and other platforms, provides access to proprietary microdata on banks and firms via research collaborations, and pursues various own data-generating activities.

What we offer

We are firmly embedded in the (inter)national scientific community and offer a vibrant, international environment. Non-research duties are light, the database infrastructure is rich, we host an active seminar culture, and research support is generous.

Your profile/Your motivation

You are curious, creative, and highly motivated to undertake research on finance, broadly defined. The completion of a PhD in Economics or Finance is expected by fall 2026. You demonstrate the potential for successful publications in excellent journals and ideally possess a network of international research collaborations. The ideal candidate is prepared to take responsibility for research-related policy work and to contribute in the structured Doctoral Progamme in Economics (IWH-DPE). Knowledge of German is not a requirement for the position.

Further information

The IWH is a family-friendly employer that guarantees equal opportunities. We highly appreciate diversity and are thus pleased to receive any application ‒ irrespective of gender, nationality, disability, or ethnic and social background. Applications from disabled persons will be given priority in the case of equal suitability, ability and professional expertise. Please indicate a severe disability in your application. The IWH aims to increase the proportion of female researchers and specifically encourages women to apply. The hiring committee will conduct a first set of interviews online.

Application procedure

We will review applications on an ongoing basis until the closure of this vacancy on March 31, 2026. We recommend to send your application until December 10, 2025, to be considered for the first round of interviews. Your application should include your CV, list of publications, references, teaching experience and evaluation, list of conference talks and successfully acquired third-party funds. Please apply for this position 2025-05 online via our application portal by March 31, 2026.
Reference Instructions: We kindly ask you to upload your reference letters via the application portal. Should your referees prefer to submit the letters directly, please ensure that your name and 2025-05 is included in the subject line and send them to reference@iwh-halle.de.

About the Leibniz Association

The Leibniz Association connects 96 independent research institutions that range in focus from natural, engineering and environmental sciences to economics, spatial and social sciences and the humanities. Leibniz Institutes address issues of social, economic and ecological relevance.

They conduct basic and applied research, including in the interdisciplinary Leibniz Research Alliances, maintain scientific infrastructure, and provide research-based services. The Leibniz Association identifies focus areas for knowledge transfer, particularly with the Leibniz research museums. It advises and informs policymakers, science, industry and the general public.

Leibniz institutions collaborate intensively with universities – including in the form of Leibniz ScienceCampi – as well as with industry and other partners at home and abroad. They are subject to a transparent, independent evaluation procedure. Because of their importance for the country as a whole, the Leibniz Association Institutes are funded jointly by Germany’s central and regional governments. The Leibniz Institutes employ around 21,400 people, including 12,170 researchers. The financial volume amounts to 2,3 billion euros.
