Assistance of the Department

Founded in 1885, the Department of Geography and Regional Research is the oldest and largest geography department in Austria. It is home to about 150 scientists in 10 working groups and 3,400 students. Since its inception, it has not only grown dynamically but also continuously broadened its focus. Since the beginning, it has accommodated both human and physical geography. The department also has been recognized for its contributions to geoinformatics and cartography. This interdisciplinary basis in computational, social, and natural sciences provides a dynamic and inspiring environment for researchers to address the grand challenges of our time. The department manages four interlinked master’s programs.

Planned start of employment is November 2026. This is a position for a temporary replacement, limited until 31.01.2031. It may be converted into unlimited employment upon mutual agreement.

Your personal sphere of play:

The department is involved in teaching and research and trains students in various study programs. The academic staff is involved in numerous university committees and maintain various contacts with institutions all over the world. The role of the assistance involves day-to-day operations of the department and taking responsibility for its operational activities and central budgeting in consultation with the heads of the department.

Your future tasks:

• You ensure compliance with the legal framework governing employment for general staff.
• You are responsible for the department’s reporting system (department report, etc.) and help to prepare target-setting meetings at faculty level.
• You assist in planning, budgeting for, and implementing investment projects of the department and ensure the economical and sustainable use of resources.
• You will contribute to the strategic planning and direction of the department (budget, resources, networking) and organize the collection of information required for decisions by the department’s management.
• You will be responsible for organizing and ensuring the communication structure for internal and external communication.
• You collaborate with the senior scientist position at the Hub for Spatial Sustainability and Digital Transformations at the department.

This is part of your personality:

Several years of professional experience in office management (preferably in an academic/university context).

• A bachelor’s degree.
• Skills in using software such as MS Office, Typo 3, and SAP.
• Fluent written and spoken communication skills in both German and English.
• Strong organizational and coordination skills.
• Knowledge of university structures and processes, or experience in university administration.
• Your working style: You enjoy working independently and in a structured manner, are service-oriented and enjoy finding solutions. You are a team player and possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
