W3 Professorship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
as of October 1st, 2026. Reference is made to § 67 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to the conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.
Duties:
The professorship is associated with the management of the Clinic and Outpatient Clinic of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the UKGM, Giessen Campus. All tasks related to the professorship in patient care are regulated through a contract by the UKGM.
In addition to the advertised professorship, the Centre for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine has independent Departments for Conservative Dentistry, Periodontology, and Endodontology, as well as for Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, and Prosthodontics.
You will represent the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery, including oral surgery and dental-surgical implantology, at the Centre for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine in research, teaching, and patient care. Close cooperation with all departments within the centre is expected.
We expect you to contribute to the existing research priorities of the aforementioned centre – interfacial interactions and oral health. Collaboration with the existing accent areas of the Faculty of Medicine, particularly “Translational Oncology- as well as “Repair and Regeneration- is desired. We also expect you to participate in other ongoing and planned collaborative research projects.
Academic teaching must be provided in the fields of dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine, and general medicine. In addition to a strong commitment to conducting courses, intensive participation in the further development of innovative teaching concepts is expected, considering the Licensing Regulations for Dentists (ZApprO).
We encourage your participation in established programs designed to support early-career researchers in the fields of science and clinical practice, such as the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL), the structured doctoral program (JLU TRAINEE), and/or the clinician scientist program (JLU CAREER).
The integration of gender aspects into research, teaching, and patient care is explicitly desired.
The universities of Giessen and Marburg have established the Research Campus of Central Hessen together with Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen – University of Applied Sciences. Within this framework, the two Faculties of Medicine engage in structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. Accordingly, you are expected to demonstrate a willingness for interdisciplinary and inter-university collaboration within campus research foci and profile areas as well as participation in joint research projects. In particular, cross university/hospital patient-oriented clinical research and participation in joint clinical studies is expected.
Requirements:
You must have completed university degrees in medicine and dentistry. You must also have a specialist certification (board certification) in oral and maxillofacial surgery. An outstanding doctoral degree and relevant additional academic achievements (demonstrated, e.g., by a postdoctoral qualification (Habilitation) or in the form of internationally recognized, subject-specific publications) are also required.
Success in the independent acquisition (and management) of externally funded projects (preferably DFG, BMFTR, EU) is a prerequisite.
Furthermore, teaching experience in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery is required as proof of your pedagogical aptitude to represent the specialist field in academic teaching with great commitment and in its whole scope.
The capability to represent the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, including oral surgery and dental-surgical implantology, in its full scope in research, teaching, and clinical care is required. A particular focus of your clinical expertise lies in the fields of tumor surgery, traumatology, orthognathic surgery, and the treatment of craniofacial malformations, including cleft lip and palate.
Experience in working in a certified oncology centre is preferred. Management experience is also advantageous.
In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
