W3 Professorship in Neurology
as of the earliest possible date. Reference is made to § 67 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to the conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.The professorship is linked to the management of the Clinic for Neurology.
Duties:
You represent the field of neurology in research, teaching and patient care across the entire spectrum. In the area of clinical care, you focus in particular on cerebrovascular diseases. The primary goal is to further expand interventional stroke therapy and thereby improve therapeutic outcomes.
Relevant research areas outside neurovascular medicine may include inflammatory CNS diseases and/or neuro-oncology. A particular focus on the development of translational animal models is expected. In this context, existing collaborations – e.g., with the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim – should be utilized.
Furthermore, multi-side patient-oriented clinical research and the initiation of and participation in joint clinical studies, including those across locations, are expected. This work will be supported by the branch office of the Coordination Center for Clinical Studies Marburg (KKS) located within our faculty.
A close research collaboration is expected between the intensive care unit of the Clinic for Neurology in the fields of neuroradiology, neurosurgery, and neuropathology, as well as in the field of digital technology with the Institute of Medical Informatics and the big data initiative of the MIRACUM Consortium.
In the clinical field, your core tasks include not only the competent clinical management of the neurointensive care unit with acute intensive care, but also the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the central nervous system as well as neuromuscular disorders.
Additionally, you will provide care for patients (m/f/d) with relevant conditions at the interdisciplinary neuro-oncological center.
All tasks related to the professorship in patient care are regulated through a contract by the UKGM.
Your teaching duties include in particular participation in lectures in neurology and neurosurgery, seminars on the interdisciplinary subject Q11 and participation in the elective course “Radiology and Interventional Therapy- representing the field of neurology.
You should also actively participate in existing research networks and independently organize research projects, new networks, and collaborations. A commitment to actively shape and cooperate within the university's focus areas and areas of potential, as well as the accent areas of the Faculty of Medicine, is expected.
Your collaboration in already existing structures for the promotion of young scientists and clinicians, such as the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL), the structured doctoral program (JLU TRAINEE) and in the clinician scientist program (JLU CAREER) is expected.
An integration of gender aspects in research, teaching and patient care is explicitly desired.
The universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (Research Campus of Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects. In particular, cross university/hospital patient-oriented clinical research and the participation in joint clinical studies is expected.
Requirements:
Prerequisites for the position include a successfully completed university education in medicine, the necessary qualification for scientific work according to § 67 Para. 1 HessHG, usually proven by a doctorate with merit, and additional pertinent academic achievements (proven e.g. by a habilitation or internationally recognized subject-specific publications in renowned national and international journals).
You also have internationally recognized expertise in the field of neurology.
Proof of a specialist qualification in neurology is required, as well as the corresponding training authorization. Management experience is an advantage.
In addition, experience in coordinating scientific projects in interdisciplinary networks and a proven track record in independently acquiring (and managing) externally funded projects (preferably DFG, BMFTR, EU) are required.
In addition, proof of a special pedagogical aptitude is required as a qualification to represent the specialist field of neurology in academic teaching with great commitment in its whole scope.
In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
