W3 professorship
"Hydraulic Turbomachinery"
INSTITUTE OF FLUID MECHANICS AND HYDRAULIC MACHINERY | AT THE EARLIEST CONVENIENCE
The University of Stuttgart is one of the leading technically oriented universities in Germany in one of Europe's most vibrant high-tech and lndustrial areas. The university is a reliable employer, partner for technology transfer and is committed to the interdisciplinary Integration of engineering, natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences based on the fundamentals of cutting-edge research at a disciplinary level.
The person to be appointed should represent the field of hydraulic turbomachinery with a special focus on hydropower technology, particularly in connection with climate-neutral and resilient energy systems in both, research and teaching. The professorship is associated with the management of the internationally renowned Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Fluid Machinery at the University of Stuttgart within the Faculty of Energy, Process and Bio Technology and currently has several high-performance test rigs, some of which are new and are to be used successfully in future research. lt is also possible to access the High-Performance Computing Center of the University of Stuttgart for computationally intensive simulations.
The candidate is expected to provide in-depth experience in several of the following research areas:
- Operational transients of hydraulic turbomachinery linked to the dynamics of main waterway systems (slightly compressible fluids, cavitation)
- Fluid-structure interaction of hydraulic turbomachinery for very large operating ranges and under operational transients
- Multidisciplinary (flow and structure) and automated design optimization on HPC dusters
- Application of artificial intelligence (Al) methods based on experimental data (e.g., machine condition monitoring) and numerical methods
- Further development of experimental measurement and testing techniques for hydraulic turbomachinery in parallel with numerical simulations
- Development of machine design, e.g., for marine energy, and prediction of performance in largescale project areas
We are looking for a candidate with an outstanding track record of high-ranking scientific publications or patents with international visibility and extensive experience in knowledge and technology transfer as well as in the acquisition of third-party research funding. Strang expertise in the field of hydraulic turbomachinery, extensive staff management experience and experience in teaching are also required, as well as a willingness to work cooperatively within the department and across disciplines.
For a qualitative assessment of your academic accomplishments, we kindly ask you to submit a short description of your three most important scientific achievements, which should be no langer than one page in total. Possible successes may include, for example, those in the fields of research, teaching, science and society, knowledge and technology transfer, Inventions and patents, software development or spin-offs.
The requirements for employment listed in § 47 and § 50 Baden-Württemberg university law (LHG) apply.
Written applications (including curriculum vitae, copies of certificates, description of the three most important scientific achievements, list of publications, description of teaching activities, main research areas) and a fully completed applicant data sheet (https://www.f04.uni-stuttgart.de/documents/Self-Disclosure-Neu.pdf) should be sent in electronic form no later than November 10th, 2025, to the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Energy-, Process- and Bio-Engineering, dekanat@f04.uni-stuttgart.de, preferably as a single PDF file. Please be aware of the risks regarding confidentiality and integrity of your application contents when sending your application via unencrypted email. Alternatively, postal applications to the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Energy-, Process- and Bio-Engineering, Pfaffenwaldring 9, 70569 Stuttgart are also accepted. Please address any questions regarding the current appointment process to Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kai Hufendiek, Dean of the Faculty, kai.hufendiek@ier.uni-stuttgart.de.
