Faculty of Medicine of the University of Freiburg invites applications for a

W3 Professorship for Virology
(Successor to Prof. Dr. Hartmut Hengel)

at the Institute for Virology to be filled by 1st April 2027. The future holder of this position will represent the field of Virology in research and teaching. She*he will be the medical director of the Institute for Virology at the Medical Center- University of Freiburg. The Institute for Virology fulfils the University Hospital‘s clinical care responsibilities in the areas of virus diagnostics and providing clinical advice on viral infections. A commitment to work in interdisciplinary cooperation with the institutes in the Department of Diagnostics, the University Hospital‘s clinics and interdisciplinary clinical centres is essential. The successful candidate will collaborate within the research priorities of the Faculty of Medicine and participate in Freiburg research networks, including the Excellence Strategy. Required are:

• a university degree in medicine, veterinary medicine or life sciences, pedagogical aptitude and a very good dissertation,
• a proven scientific profile with outstanding publications and third-party funding,
• didactic qualifications and a special commitment to teaching virology in medical and natural science degree programmes,
• and proven leadership qualities, including a team-oriented and cooperative leadership style.

Also desirable is a board certification (Facharztanerkennung) in microbiology, virology, and infectious disease epidemiology or relevant proven diagnostic experience. In all other respects, the conditions for appointment according to § 47 Landeshochschulgesetz apply. The position is tenured according to § 50 para 1 LHG.
