W3 Endowed Professorship for “Hemodynamic Modeling in Atherosclerosis- (f/m/d) KSB Foundation W3 endowed professorship
Universität Heidelberg - Medizinische Fakultät
The Medical Faculty Mannheim of Heidelberg University offers the position of a
W3 Endowed Professorship for “Hemodynamic Modeling in Atherosclerosis” (f/m/d)
KSB Foundation W3 endowed professorship
to be filled for the first time.
The professorship is based at the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine and pursues an interdisciplinary, clinical-translational approach. The aim is to combine state-of-the-art imaging techniques with software-supported analysis of flow dynamics and mathematical modeling for the precise characterization of hemodynamic mechanisms in atherosclerosis. In research and teaching, the professorship will represent functional cardiovascular imaging with a focus on hemodynamic modeling and act as a bridge between basic research, medical technology development, and clinical application. The focus is particularly on photon-counting computed tomography (PCCT), 4D MRI flow imaging, and AI-supported analysis and modeling methods (e.g., CT-FFR, predictive software models for plaque rupture and thrombus migration).
The desired candidate should have a proven track record in the publication of relevant articles, successful acquisition and implementation of third-party funded projects in the fields of non-invasive determination of hemodynamic parameters and pressure gradients based on modern CT and MRI techniques, development and validation of software- and AI-supported models for segmentation, classification or functional analysis of imaging data sets, and characterization of atherosclerotic plaques. The candidate is also expected to analyze and mathematically model dynamic flow changes and thrombogenic processes for risk stratification and to translate these methods into patient-oriented diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making processes. The professorship is closely integrated into the Mannheim Comprehensive Medical Systems Technology Campus (MCSC) and cooperates in particular with the Center for Cardiovascular Imaging, the Mannheim Institute for Intelligent Systems in Medicine (MIISM), the M²OLIE research campus, the CZS Heidelberg Center for Model-Based AI at the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR), the European Center for Angioscience (ECAS), and the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) Mannheim, as well as other national and international research partners. Active participation in interdisciplinary research networks and the acquisition of competitive third-party funding are expected. In teaching, the professorship is involved in the MaReCuM model degree program, particularly in modules on cardiovascular diagnostics, as well as in the master's degree program in biomedical engineering. In addition, research-oriented teaching formats, elective courses, and structured support for young researchers are intended.
Prerequisites for application are a completed university degree, a qualified doctorate (Ph.D., Dr. rer. nat., Dr.-Ing., or comparable) in a relevant field (e.g., computer science, applied mathematics, biomedical engineering, medical physics, or a related field) and pedagogical eligibility, which is usually proven by experience in teaching. Furthermore, in accordance with § 47 section 2 of the Higher Education Law of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg, additional scientific achievements (a habilitation, a successfully evaluated junior professorship or habilitation-equivalent qualifications) must be proven. Internationally visible, excellent qualifications in research and teaching as well as relevant management experience, successful acquisition of third-party funding, didactic competence, cooperation and leadership skills and commitment to academic self-administration are expected.
The W3 endowed professorship is limited to five years and is financed by the KSB Foundation.
Applications with the usual documents should be submitted exclusively in electronic form and in accordance with the “Applicant Guideline Format Template” and the “Applicant Form” of the Medical Faculty Mannheim for W3 professorships (see https://www.umm.uni-heidelberg.de/karriere/berufung/ ) to Prof. Dr. med. Sergij Goerdt, Dean of the Medical Faculty Mannheim of Heidelberg University, University Medical Center Mannheim, by March 15, 2026.
Heidelberg University stands for equal opportunities and diversity. Qualified female candidates are especially invited to apply. Persons with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are equally qualified.
