The Faculty of Biology and Chemistry invites applications for a
W2 Professorship in Food Chemistry with a focus on food analysis
as of the earliest possible date. Reference is made to § 67 Para. 5 and 6 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to the conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected. The professorship is established as part of the Heisenberg program of the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft – DFG). A prerequisite for the establishment of the professorship and for the call is that a funding application submitted by the future position holder (m/f/d) to the DFG is accepted for inclusion in the Heisenberg program.
After a positive funding decision, the appointment is initially made on a temporary basis for a period of three years, provided that the requirements under civil law are met. After a positive evaluation, the professorship will subsequently be transformed into a permanent W2 professorship with the same functional description.
Duties:
The focus of your work will lie on research in the field of residue and contaminant analysis. In this context, scientific cooperation within Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) is desired, e.g. with the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences and Environmental Management and/or the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Participation in interdisciplinary research projects within the university-wide area of potential “Agricultural Systems and Resources- is expected.
The professorship should also promote the ongoing internationalization activities within both, the faculty and JLU, e.g. by supervising international students and through active contribution to existing and planned joint research projects.
Your teaching duties will amount to 8 SWS (weekly lecture hours). Teaching duties may be reduced by 50% for the duration of the Heisenberg funding. Following the Heisenberg grant, you will take over additional teaching in all study degree courses in the field of chemistry in which food chemistry is represented. Continuous development of course concepts including the use of digital media is expected. Teaching will be in German and English.
In addition, we expect active participation in the education of doctoral students, e.g. in the Giessen Graduate Center for Natural Sciences and Psychology (GGN).
A continued record of successful independent acquisition of external funding, preferably from the DFG, BMFTR or the EU, as well as a commitment to externally funded joint projects will be expected of you while working at JLU.
Requirements:
We are seeking an internationally renowned personality who is an acknowledged expert in a current research field in instrumental analysis with a research focus on toxicologically relevant residues and contaminants in food.
In addition to a qualification for academic work, which is generally demonstrated by the high quality of the doctorate, a pedagogical aptitude appropriate to the teaching duties is required. Teaching responsibilities require language competence in both German and English (German: language level C2, English: language level C1).
You should also have international networks in the specified research fields.
Further prerequisites are a scientific university degree in food chemistry or a comparable natural science field, an excellent doctoral degree and additional academic achievements (proven e.g. by a postdoctoral qualification (habilitation) or peer-reviewed pertinent publications, particularly with a focus on instrumental analysis).
Successful independent acquisition of external funding should be proven. Visible external funding, particularly in joint projects (e.g. DFG priority programmes, BMFTR, ERC), is desired in this context.
Furthermore, experience in academic teaching at a scientific university should be proven. Ideally, excellent didactic skills can be documented by positive course evaluations.
Experience in academic self-administration is also desirable.
In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
The JLU welcomes qualified applications regardless of biological and social gender (m/f/d), disability, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, age as well as sexual orientation and identity. The JLU aims for a higher proportion of women in accordance with the women's promotion plan. We therefore particularly encourage qualified female candidates to apply. JLU is certified as a family-friendly university. Applications from disabled people of equal aptitude will be given preference.
We strongly recommend candidates to refer to our fact sheet on application procedures.
Please send your application with the required documents via online form to the President of Justus Liebig University Giessen by October 2nd, 2025, quoting the reference number 8-13/25.
