The University of Vienna invites outstanding candidates to apply for mulitple doctoral positions in the Vienna Doctoral School in Chemistry as part of its Autumn Call 2026, offering multiple funded doctoral positions in total.

Your personal sphere of influence:

We are looking for international early-career researchers interested in pursuing doctoral research in areas such as Food Chemistry and Toxicology and Functional Materials and Catalysis. Successful candidates will join a structured doctoral programme offering first-class supervision, vibrant research networks, and opportunities to publish, teach, and engage internationally. Candidates can select from a list of various open positions of supervisors in the participating doctoral schools (available on the Call website).

Your future tasks:

We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12 months at the latest and to participate in research, teaching and administration, including:

  • Participation in research projects / research studies
  • Participation in publications / academic articles / presentations
  • Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
  • Supervision of students
  • Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums
  • Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration
  • Strong communication, data presentation and visualization skills
  • Ability to work both, independently and collaboratively

This is part of your personality:

  • Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs): DoSChem is open to all early stage researchers of any nationality, who have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree in chemical sciences. The applicant needs to hold a master‘s degree or its equivalent in Chemistry or in another relevant discipline that qualifies the applicant to embark on a doctorate. All applicants shall complete their master’s degree before the anticipated position appointment. At the time point of the application: you are eligible to apply while you are still finishing your MA studies and don’t hold your final certificate yet.
  • The degree certificate must be available before being accepted into the doctoral program.
  • The DoSChem program language is English; therefore, written and oral English proficiency is expected and essential. Formal proof of competence in English is not required, unless it is specified in the description of PhD position. If invited for interviews the DoSChem selection committee will evaluate the applicant’s English skills.

  • Model 1: The employment duration is 3 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 3 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a declaration of non-extension. With appropriate work progress, an extension to a total maximum of 4 years is possible.
  • Model 2: The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.

  • Curriculum vitae (CV) indicating your educational path including timeline and academic degrees, addressing your technical proficiency, past/ongoing projects you were scientifically involved in along with your publication list and major achievements.
  • A Strong Motivation letter explaining why you apply for the advertised position by addressing your motivation and qualifications. Clearly indicate your desired research area (max. 1 page).
  • Copies of bachelor’s and master’s degree certificates (including CREDIT TRANSCRIPTS!) in German or in certified English translation in addition to their original language. Self-translated transcripts of your certificates will not be recognized
  • Contact information of two referees, who have PREVIOUSLY SUPERVISED you in your past research projects (e.g. Master thesis) and are willing to provide recommendation letters upon request by DoSChem.

If applying to Chemistry, you may indicate up to two preferred projects by selecting a first-choice PI and a second-choice PI.
