Your personal sphere of influence:

Professor Michael Lysander Fremuth, Professor of Fundamental and Human Rights at the Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law and Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights, is seeking to appoint a University Assistant (Prae Doc) starting at 01.10.2026.

Ideally, applicants will have an excellent background in Austrian public law, in particular administrative law. Candidates who completed their law degree at the University of Vienna should have achieved above-average results in the FÜM III examination. Applicants who graduated from another university are expected to demonstrate an equivalent level of academic excellence. An interest in the intersection of fundamental rights and administrative law is considered an asset.

The successful candidate will be based at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights, Freyung 6, 1010 Vienna. The Institute offers a motivated and diverse team, as well as a collegial, supportive, and intellectually stimulating working environment.

The working languages at the Institute are German and English.

Your responsibilities:

As a University Assistant, you will actively and responsibly contribute to the research, teaching, administration, and coordination activities of Professor Michael Lysander Fremuth's team.

  • conduct research on topics at the intersection of administrative law and fundamental and human rights;
  • independently develop research projects within the Department’s areas of expertise; the opportunity to pursue a PhD is available, but not mandatory.
  • further develop your international publication record and academic presentation activities;
  • independently teach courses in German in accordance with the applicable collective agreement provisions;
  • support the Department’s examination activities, in particular the FÜM III examination;
  • supervise and advise students as part of your academic responsibilities;
  • contribute to evaluation measures and quality assurance processes; and
  • support Professor Michael Lysander Fremuth in his research and teaching activities.

Your profile:

  • a completed Diploma or Master’s degree in Law;
  • an excellent academic record, particularly in relevant examinations;
  • prior experience working in an academic environment, ideally as a student assistant or research assistant at a university chair;
  • excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • an excellent command of German, enabling you to teach courses in German from the outset;
  • excellent written and spoken English;
  • strong IT skills, including experience with online conferencing platforms and lecture recording tools; and
  • the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Desirable qualifications:

The following qualifications are considered an advantage:

  • a record of academic publications;
  • a research proposal outlining your intended doctoral project;
  • familiarity with university structures and administrative processes;
  • an understanding of the operation of non-university research institutions; and
  • experience in advising and supporting students.

Contract duration: The employment duration ist 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship ist automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.
