Your personal sphere of play:

The Department of Prehistory and Historical Archaeology is advertising a full-time position (University assistant postdoctoral to Prof. Thomas Kühtreiber) in the field of modern archaeology. The position is closely linked to the ongoing research programmes ‘Dynamics in Rural Areas’ and ‘Identities and Material Cultures’ at the Chair of Historical Archaeology.

Your future tasks:

The postdoctoral University assistant is expected to develop independent research projects on early modern archaeology in line with the research programmes at the Chair of Historical Archaeology. A specialisation in modern archaeology (19th–21st centuries) is desirable. Collaboration and independent work in research, teaching and administration

  • Development and submission of third-party funded projects
  • Publications / academic articles / lecturing
  • Contributing to and independently conducting courses in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement
  • Student supervision
  • Assisting with the organisation of meetings, conferences and symposia
  • Participation in the administration of the institute, teaching and research

This is part of your personality:

  • Successful candidates must hold a doctorate/PhD in Prehistory and Historical Archaeology or a related discipline.
  • They must have knowledge of modern archaeology, demonstrated through relevant training or practical experience (e.g. a PhD thesis on a relevant topic, participation in relevant research projects, or publications). Knowledge of modern archaeology (19th–21st centuries) is also desirable.
  • You have a basic knowledge of related historical disciplines (history, art history, cultural studies, etc.) demonstrated through relevant training or practical experience.
  • You have experience of working in a team and on interdisciplinary research projects.
  • Knowledge of image-based modelling and geographic information systems (preferably QGIS) is desirable.
  • During the initial period, you must demonstrate proficiency in German (B2); written and spoken English (C1) forms an important basis for your work.

What we offer:

  • Contract duration: The start date will be 1 February 2027 at the earliest. The contract term is six years.
  • Fair salary: The monthly gross salary is 5079,50 € (14x/year). Prior experience can be taken into account.
  • Work-Life-Balance: The position is for 40 hours per week. You will have flexible working hours and may also work remotely on a part-time basis. We place great importance on a high degree of flexibility in working hours, particularly with regard to applicants’ care responsibilities.

  • Good public transport connections: Your workplace in the center of beautiful Vienna is easily accessible by public transport. The place of work is Vienna, unless you are traveling for research and conference purposes. A workspace in a shared office will be provided. 
  • Internal further training: Opportunity to deepen your skills on an ongoing basis. There are over 600 courses to choose from – free of charge.
