With us, you will also find space to unfold your potential. We are looking for a/an ...

University Assistant Postdoctoral

52 Faculty of Chemistry
Startdate: 14.09.2026 | Working hours: 20 | Collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc)

Reference no.: 6126

Explore and teach at the University of Vienna, where over 7,500 brilliant minds have found a unique balance of freedom and support. Join us if you’re passionate about groundbreaking international research and academic excellence. Ready to be part of our team? Let’s shape the future together!

Your personal sphere of play:

The successful candidate will join the Institute of Organic Chemistry at the Facilty of Chemistry and a dynamic international research environment dedicated to developing functional molecular architectures for light harvesting, photocatalysis, electrosynthesis, and optoelectronic applications. The research activities will focus on the design and synthesis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heteroatom-doped graphenoid systems through the development of new synthetic methodologies based on radical annulation strategies, photocatalytic transformations, and electrosynthetic approaches. These molecular platforms will be engineered as next-generation functional materials for applications in optoelectronics, molecular energy conversion, and light-responsive technologies. The project combines advanced targeted organic synthesis, with particular emphasis on the discovery of innovative synthetic methodologies for the controlled construction of extended π-conjugated systems. Special attention will be devoted to developing radical-mediated annulation reactions that enable the rapid and modular synthesis of structurally defined PAHs, nanographenes, and molecular semiconductors with tailored electronic and photophysical properties.

The employment duration is 3 years.

Your future tasks:

The selected candidate will work on the preparation and characterization of sophisticated molecular architectures using modern synthetic methodologies, including transition-metal catalysis and radical-mediated transformations, and multistep organic synthesis. The research program further aims to establish structure, property relationships governing the electronic, photophysical, and charge-transport properties of these materials, enabling their integration into emerging optoelectronic and energy-related applications. The position, therefore, offers a unique opportunity to work at the interface of synthetic organic chemistry, radical chemistry, molecular materials, and optoelectronics within a highly collaborative and internationally visible research framework.

Additionally, the successful candidate is expected to:

  • Participate in international publications/ academic articles and presentations.
  • Participate in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement.
  • Supervise students.
  • Collaborate with national and international partners.
  • Support the application process for projects and securing third-party funds.
  • Take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration.

This is part of your personality:

  • You hold a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry.
  • Previous experience working with organic synthesis, total synthesis, electrosynthesis and catalysis is required.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation, as well as the ability to critically analyze scientific literature.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and passion for science.
  • Ability to work independently in your field of expertise and collaborate in a research team.
  • Great sense of thoroughness and organization.
  • Previous experience in supervision or with students will be particularly considered an added value.

What we offer:

  • Access to excellent research expertise: state-of-the-art facilities, and mentorship enabling unique research possibilities.
  • Inspiring working atmosphere: Integration into an international academic environment characterized by collegiality, appreciation, and a respectful working culture.
  • Good public transport connections: Your workplace in the center of beautiful Vienna is easily accessible by public transport.
  • Internal further training & Coaching: Opportunity to deepen your skills on an ongoing basis. There are over 600 courses to choose from – free of charge. Opportunities for continuous personal and professional development, including proposal writing.
  • Fixed-term contract and fair salary: The basic salary of EUR 5.014,30 (full-time basis; 14 times a year) for a period of 3 years / 36 months increases if we can credit professional experience. The employment duration is 3 years.
  • Equal opportunities for all: We welcome every additional/new personality to the team!

It is that easy to apply:

  • With your scientific curriculum vitae / letter of intent
  • With your list of publications
  • With your summary of research interests (max. 1 p.)
  • Doctoral Degree
  • Contact details of persons who could provide reference letters
