The Department of Chemistry invites applications for a
Tenure Track Professorship (W1 Tenure Track to W2) in Physical Chemistry
The successful applicant is expected to strengthen the research priorities of the Department of Chemistry by establishing an independent research group and to actively participate in research alliances and existing collaborative initiatives, particularly in the area of experimental surface and interface chemistry and on-surface synthesis. Close alignment with the university’s research profile area “Materials, Interfaces, Semiconductors” is essential, and participation in planned collaborative research projects is expected.Tasks:
This call is explicitly aimed at researchers in the early stages of their scientific careers. The duration of employment in research and science after obtaining the doctoral degree should not exceed four years. In addition, applicants should not have received their doctorate at the University of Marburg. In case the doctoral degree was obtained at the University of Marburg, the applicant should have worked in research and science outside of the University of Marburg for at least two years thereafter (in accordance with § 70 Abs. 3 Hessisches Hochschulgesetz Hess.HG, the State of Hessen Higher Education Act). The professorship is expected to represent the field of Physical Chemistry in both research and teaching, with a particular focus on advancing modern experimental approaches in surface and interface chemistry as well as on-surface synthesis. The successful candidate is expected to establish an internationally visible and competitive junior research group that contributes innovative insights into molecular processes at surfaces and actively engages with the research profile of Philipps-Universität Marburg.Active participation in ongoing and planned collaborative research projects - such as DFG-funded research consortia, initiatives, and priority programs - is explicitly expected. In the long term, contributions to the development of new collaborative research efforts are welcome.
In teaching, the professorship is responsible for covering the full scope of Physical Chemistry in the faculty’s Bachelor’s and Master’s programs. Particular emphasis is placed on conveying experimental competencies and integrating students into research-oriented teaching formats. Additional responsibilities include contributing to the development of innovative teaching concepts - including the use of digital media - supervising theses and doctoral researchers. In addition, a willingness to make a committed contribution to academic self-administration is expected.
Profile:
We seek an internationally visible early-career researcher with an independent scientific profile in the field of Physical Chemistry, particularly in the area of surface and interface science. The candidate should have demonstrated initial outstanding scientific achievements and possess the potential to develop a high-impact research program at the international level. Experience with modern atomic-scale microscopic and spectroscopic methods for surface studies, along with expertise in model catalysis, on-surface synthesis, or related areas, is desirable. The professorship is responsible for contributing to the teaching of Physical Chemistry in the Faculty’s Bachelor and Master degree programs. The ability to teach in both German and English is expected.
Applicants must hold a completed university degree and an excellent doctorate in chemistry, physics, or a closely related field. A demonstrated aptitude for academic teaching is required. Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding is considered an asset.
The employment requirements of §§ 67, 68, and especially § 70 HessHG apply. The Tenure Track Professorship is initially a fixed-term W1 position (6 years). If the requirements under German civil service law are met, the candidate will be granted temporary civil servant status. In the event of a positive evaluation of the pro-fessional, didactic and personal aptitude, the applicant will be granted a civil service status for life, combined with the assignment of a W2 permanent professorship.
