Job description:

The University of Vienna is internationally renowned for its excellence in teaching and research, and counts more than 7,500 academics from all disciplines. This breadth of expertise offers unique opportunities to address the complex challenges of modern society, to develop comprehensive new approaches, and educate the problem-solvers of tomorrow from a multidisciplinary perspective.

The Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Vienna invites applications for a

Tenure-Track Professorship in Rapid Marine Adaptation50 Faculty of Life Sciences
Working hours: 40 | Collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. A2

Reference no.: 6004

The position

The oceans are crucial for life on earth. Overharvesting and climate change lead to dramatic changes in how ocean ecosystems function and how they can be utilized by humans. A better understanding of rapid adaptation potential is key to predict whether species can evolve fast enough to cope with conditions in a future, warmer and more acidic ocean. The University of Vienna invites applications for a Tenure Track Professorship in the field of Rapid Marine Adaptation. We seek a scientist with an outstanding record in marine evolutionary genomics who investigates rapid evolutionary responses—such as evolutionary rescue—through field studies and/or experimental evolution in the laboratory. Preferred model systems should be eukaryotic marine organisms that have vital roles in oceanic or coastal ecosystems. The successful candidate will cooperate with physiologists, ecologists, biochemists, systems biologists and evolutionary biologists in Vienna to link genomic targets of selection to organismal phenotypes and local environmental conditions. This integrative work will advance mechanistic understanding and predictive modeling of rapid adaptation to climate change in marine environments and inform effective marine conservation strategies across Europe.

The tenure-track position is embedded in an active and stimulating research environment at the University of Vienna. Located in the Department of Functional and Evolutionary Ecology (https://ecology.univie.ac.at/), the new position will contribute to our research and teaching in the fields of marine climate change ecology and is embedded into the strategic priorities ‘Systems of Life’ and ‘Climate, Environment, Sustainability’ (https://www.univie.ac.at/en/research/strategic-priorities). University-internal structures and programs, such as the Vienna Doctoral School of Ecology & Evolution (VDSEE), the Environment and Climate Research Hub (https://ech.univie.ac.at/), the platform evolVienna (https://www.evolvienna.at/), and several other research platforms support high-quality education of students as well as scientific collaboration with colleagues at the University of Vienna in an interdisciplinary manner.
