Senior Scientist

The Department of Geography and Regional Research is part of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy. It is the largest and oldest Geography department in Austria. Scientific degrees are offered in a bachelor program, in four master programs, in teacher education (bachelor program and master program), in a faculties-arching master program in "Environmental Sciences", and on doctoral level. Your personal sphere of influence:

The position is assigned to the research group Physical Geography ENGAGE - Geomorphic Systems and Risk Research, which has a sound reputation in the domains of geomorphic systems and hazard and risk research including landslides, "human impact" on geosystems and spatial modeling of geomorphic processes as well as in the applied research including global environmental change, natural hazards and -risks, vulnerability, multi-hazard risk and early warning systems.

Your future tasks:

• Supervision of infrastructure field equipment
• Continuous contribution to the scientific profile of the University of Vienna in the field of (Physical) Geography by conducting own research activities leading to scientific publications
• Participation in research, teaching and administration
• Participation in evaluation activities and in quality assurance
• Moderating the NoeSLIDE project (noeslide.at)
• Participation in research projects
• (International) publishing and presentation activities
• Project application and (external) fundraising
• Spatio-temporal modelling and observation of earth surface processes
• Analysis of human impact on the earth surface
• Scientific supervision of IT-Systems
• Organization, supervision of and contributions to geomorphic field work
• Development and implementation of web-based visualizations of landslide monitoring data
• Independent teaching as defined by the collective agreement
• Examination activities
• Support of students

This is part of your personality:

• PhD / Doctorate in the field Physical Geography and/or Geomorphology and/or Applied Geosciences
• Professional competence in Geomorphology, human impact on geosystems and natural hazards and risks
• Outstanding dissertation
• Experience in moderating landslide monitoring programs.
• High research initiatives proven by international refereed publications
• Willingness to contribute to research management, leading small teams and guiding project assistants
• Computer literacy and GIS knowledge
• Modelling experience in spatio-temporal analysis of earth surface processes
• High level of the English language in reading, writing and speaking
• Knowledge of principles of teaching
• Experience in teaching / experience in e-learning
• Knowledge of university structures and processes
• High command of written and oral language
• Proven ability to work in teams
• Ability to manage conflicts
• Didactic qualifications

Fixed-term contract and fair salary: Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b, i.e. a gross monthly salary of EUR 5,014.30 (on a full time, i.e. 40h/week, basis; 14 times per year; amount as of 1 January 2026), with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
